Default Employee taxes

This may be a mistake going at this myself but I want to try. I am getting prepared for the day when I can hire full time employees. I got my EIN but the question poped into my head "How are the taxes deducted from employees?" Do I deduct them before writing the check? If so how do I determine the proper amount to deduct? Any advice would be great.

I can only speak from the laws here Income tax, Unemployment Insurance and Canada Pension is deducted from the gross pay, then by the 15th of every month I have to remit to Revenue Canada, I have to match CPP deductions at the same rate and Unemployment Insurance X 1.2, generally payroll is included with your accounting software.

I think if your not sure, use a trusted CPA, or a payrole service for a while, just so its done right, learn as its being done, then move into doing it yourself. If you deal with a CPA now, then most of the time they are willing to work with you for free or atleast cheap to help you out and keep your business with them. Just a thought its better to do it by the book when dealing with taxes.

I spoke with my mother today who is a retired accountant. I asked her if she dealt with payroll and the answer was yes. She said it is very easy. She said when I get my packet for the EIN it will include charts and what not telling me exactly how to deduct how much and for what. She explained its just some basic math for example 2.5% for federal so on and so forth depending on tax bracket of course. I cant afford much now and the one occasional employee I do have I give only $8 per hour, unless he kicks but then on payday I will surprise him with a check for $10 per hour. My hope though is by Jan-2010 to have at least one full time employee. Hopefully the economy and clients will agree with this. At this point I just hire my one occasional employee every now and then for extra help. Probably just once a month and normally its a huge hit on profits when I do but it keeps the clients happy. picframer, How many employees do you have? How long did it take from the time you started until you hired your first one? Do you have any advice to give me for going this rout? My goal is as soon as possible to have enough workers to do the work for me so I can relax. I know this sounds bad but while I enjoy the work I enjoy my air conditioned office better lol.
