Mr. Williams said because of the trend toward using more landscapers, he’s also seeing an increase in the number of mulch businesses around the Upstate.
"There’s good money in it," he said. "Nobody cuts their own grass anymore, just like nobody cooks for themselves anymore."
Mulch companies say there is more business out there, whether caused by a recent lack of rain or a desire to do less yard work.
Clemson University used to purchase 15 to 20 dump-truck loads of mulch a year from Bark Plus Inc. in Pendleton. Today, the university is buying 50 to 60 tractor-trailer loads of mulch, Bark Plus owner Jonn McCall said.
