I have never in my life used a striping kit.



You've got to experiment with deck type, deck height, deck pitch and blade to deck distance. There is no forumla as all decks are different.

I have seen rollers, hanging chains, broom heads used as stripers.
I myself have never used any. If you play with the deck pitch and mow back and forth in line you can create decent stripes. See Ritchiem's post on striping.
I couldn't explain it any better.
