Hello to all!
04-16-2009 * San Antonio, Texas: I am Trey Bernhardt. I am the owner-mower pusher-tree pruner-and crew leader fo my company BMW-Pro Lawn - Tree - & Yard Care Srevices of San Antonio. I am new on here. A friend in the Lawn Care Business recommended I take the lawn care school and get a certificate, this is my goal! I have been in the lawn care business in San Antonio for almost 2 years. I found out business evaporated in the winter time and I started a clean up & hauiling service. WOW! never knew there was so much junk to haul to BFI. So far I have had the opportunity to get a contract for lawn care for a Walmarts Store, and do work for the U. S. Government Dept. of Home Security! I have quite a few real estate company & private property contracts for lawn care. I am now working 2 crews most days. I enjoy the work, going to bid jobs, and getting PAID when I am through. This spring I hired a journey painter as a foreman and also started a house painting company. Doing good! I have a family, 4 kids, and my wonderfull wife Jacqueline serves as Dispatcher for the crews, plus assists those in San Antonio that speak only Spanish. She is very fluent in spanish and my kids are learning Spanish & English. I love our family trips and outings. We love God and our church life as well. We enjoy our home computer, and I am learning web design from my dad, who is a website designer & search engine placement guru! He keeps me on the top in Google & Yahoo! This is a great help to my business. He can help you too for cheap.
Formwely I owned an EMS Ambulance Company in San Antonio, worked for GM Fleet, & several new & used car dealers as Internet Sales Manager. I have a college degree, B.S. Marketing.

Hi Trey,
WOW Welcome to our forum!
You got a lot going on there!

That is a fascinating background!
How did you ever get involved with that and what did you think of the experience?

As a teenager my dad was the elected constable in Brazoria County & also owned the local ambulance service. After High School I went to EMT school at the local Jr. College. I worked for my dad until he sold his ambulance company in Houston & I opened a ambulance company in San Antonio. I did this for over 3 years but sold it when I had graduated college & GM offered me a great job. Business continues to grow but we sure could use rain in San Antonio! This is 2 years running where the grass is dying rather than growing.
your friend,
Trey Bernhardt

Trey,
How do the two businesses compare to each other? Do you find you like one more over the other?
What do you like about them or dislike about them?

Steve,
I really don't care what I'm doing as long as I am working. I enjoy mowing & pride myself on doing a good job in both San Antonio & New Braunfels (30 minute trip) but I also work in 14 other small towns that surround San Antonio. I enjoy clean up projects & have started doing demolition as well since a general contractor's license & insurance is inexpensive compared to the income I am now generating and single jobs now can be $10K & more on cleanup projects. These jobs have included Walmarts. (I have been under contract with WALMARTS for 11 months to mow, keep up the property around the store, & cleanup debris from 5 acres twice a month.), the U.S. Air Force, Department of Homeland Security, multiple churches (I offer a discount of 10% whatever the job would normally be for churches & not for profit groups). They call & I do the job. But I make so many contacts now from my lawn care customers & their referrals. If it's work I bid on it. I plan on expanding & growing my business until it clears $10 a month, every month. But here one can't just depend on lawn care, because with drought there is no real weekly or biweekly lawn service. We have been under a WATERING RESTRICTIONS ordinance & NO BURNING ordinance in multiple counties in our area. It is not right to charge a contracted customer when you have NO work there to do. When lawn & yards get as they have for the past 2 years; I tell the home owners to call when they need the service. There is no green grass, it is all burnt brown. 2 years in a row. I can't say I prefer either service than the other, but staying busy is my real favorite task! Pray for rain!

We talk about commercial property maintenance and debris cleanup once in a while. Do you have any advice for others when they are trying to figure out how many man hours are involved in such work? I could see cleaning up parking debris, taking forever.
I think everyone can picture in their mind a walmart property and parking lot. How long would such a sized property normally take to service per week?
When is the best time to clean up the parking debris and how do you do it? What kind of machines?
