hey guys whats going on? its 1 in the morning here and i just got done folding flyers. just folded 100. im goin in the morning to go put them in peoples doors. hoping to get more clients. sound like a good idea? any suggestions? im not new to mowing but new to the business end. ive always worked for my dad and he has slimmed down on yards. he is a parks and recs manager so he has alot going on. so i decided to get off the titty and shoot for it myself. im 19 and some prob will say im dumb and im not looking for that im looking for encouragement and a little or alot of advice. i went and got a snapper pro s50x with a 26 hp briggs and 48in deck and got a shindaiwa t242 and a stihl b55 working on building up. my dad gave me some hammy down lawn mowers and let me have my baby 32in walk behind. i may not sound like much but im not lookin to start on top. so any suggestions on expanding would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the long thread but im fillin everyone in and tryin to get under someones wing for a little help wth biz advice.

and yes i know my name is spelt wrong ill fix soon. but thats the name of my biz. is it a good one?

I think you are doing great. The key to getting new customers is knowing people and meeting people.

The more people that know you and know you are running a lawn care business, the more clients you will have.

If you hand out 100 flyers, be prepared to possible get a 1% response.

Get business cards made up and hand them out to everyone you know. Have your dad hand them out to everyone he knows. Have everyone in your family and your friends hand them out too. Do what ever it takes to get the word out that you are in business.

Keep me posted on how everything goes tomorrow. Remember to talk to as many potential customers as possible. The more you talk to, the better your chances are of making a sale.

i am planning on passing more flyers out but the 100 was a start. i spent my saturday walking around different neighborhoods and knocking on doors and giving estimates. out of the 30 houses i went too i got one definite yard. very nice guy. new to the town so doesnt know many people but saids he loves my work and kindlyness. and i also got a shrub job next door which is good. ive read forums before and they made a good point about how mowing can turn into cleaning gutters and gardening etc. but i wasnt put down after all that waking and driving and only getting one yard out of it. i refuse to give up. but back to the flyers. i made 100 and i put at the bottom that im doing an easter special. im knocking bout 10 bucks off a yard but i figured if they like the work theyll want it for the season. but im afraid theyll think its goin to be 10 off all season. im will to charge cheap but i worry about people thinking that im unprofessional cause of my price. but ive mowed my yard 50 times with my first zero turn ive ever owned so im anxious. but im hopin to get more than 10 contracts out of every 100 flyers but if thats what it takes ill do it everynight. one more thing im afraid of is im thinkin i started to late. thanks steve. your opening my eyes. its nice to talk one on one with the pros. tells me there are still good people in this world. You are welcome.

Remember you can do this. You CAN do this.

I wouldn't focus too much on giving discounts. If you can prove yourself to be reliable, that will be golden to your customers. Let them know you are reliable. You will show up when you say you will show up. You will answer your phone. Etc.

Step by step. Neighbor by neighbor, you will get the word out. Make yourself available to them and before you know it, you will be swamped with work.

Keep us posted on how it all goes tomorrow.

i have high hopes and dreams i do believe i can do this. i take that back. I KNOW I CAN. i will keep everyone posted on how tomorrow goes. if im posting by 7 or 8 saying i just signed on 5 or 10 or maybe just 2 or 3 ill be floating on clound 9. but is and almost 2 and im getting up at 6. 4 hours of anticipated sleep. but im going to pop another question out before i go. say someone has a lawn care service theyve been with for a year or so. i come along after theyve signed the contract but they still want an estimate. and i give them one and they call me wanting to mow for them this year. what do i do? im in this for the joy and money to eat and maybe buy more equip. but i dont want to turn down a job. could possibly give me a bad rep.?! night everyone. thanks for the advice. im going to keep my gut sucked in chest stuck out and my chin held high. (line from a song) and sorry for the spelling mistakes. im on my cellphone/connection to the net. htc ppc 6800 it likes to use its own words not mine haha

so i didnt quite pass out 100 flyers. i passed out about 30. first i knocked then if they didnt answer i left a flyer. i searched at a bad time cause it was around 2 or so. so people were still at work. but i lowered my price once again and still heard i mow it myself. i know i should wait it off but im afraid to go into the season with less than 20 yards. so is lowering my price to steal business and make things right with people so bad? i talk to my dad about it. he said you wouldnt want someone stealing your business would you? i said no. but i said if they can beat my price and still profit i want to know what they are doing right. i thought about going to the police department and offering big discounts to the law officers. and i also want to give big discounts to familys with soldiers. so please help me with what i should do to boom business?

The problem with lowering the price is you have to do more work to get the same level of profit.

Can you tell us a little about how things went where you wanted to hand out 100 flyers but ended up doing 30?

Sorry it took so long to get back. Ive been sorta busy with maintaining the lawn mowers and trimmers. Found my old hedge trimmer today in the old boxed in so ima see if it still runs. But i passed out the 30 flyers because i got discouraged by the already mowed lawns. Ive been trying to get at least 3 yards or so in a block so i can mow one big yard. But i did pass out 30 flyers and the house i least expected called me and wanted a estimate. He said he would call back. He asked what kind of equipment i had and i told him. So anyways he said ill call you back. He talked to his wife and i got it. Pretty big yard. Beautiful 6800 square foot home and a big 3 acre pond with 3 steep inbankments. That was fun to mow with the snapper. But it wasnt my first rodeo. i mowed 4 acres by myself at 2 1/2 deck height. And edged and trimmed places i didnt could get by the pond. But they said they love my work and that they want me to mow there business. I didnt know it but they are co-owners of empire or investors or something and they own Joplins biggest electrical outfit. And the best thing about it is. They said i could use them for references for the citys prosecuting attorney and judges. So im on cloud nine. But i plan on more flyers. But what made me mad. I bidded on a motorcycle shop. And the guy that got it was 125 over my estimate. I Put 320 and he puts 445 and gets it. AND HE JUST STARTED MOWING but ill be on later. I have to work on this hedge trimmer later guys

Cutting-Plus

You have a lot of fire in your belly. Stay after it and donít give up. From what you said, your client loves your work already and itís your first big job. Word of mouth goes a long way.

Also, try to never lower your price just to get business. You have to have a set price you want to make an hour when you are working or bidding on jobs.

Your work ethic and finished product will stand on its own merit.
Good to see someone excited about what they are doing.

God bless is nice also.

This is a great example of the lowest bid doesn't always win the job. As you bid on more properties you will get a better feel for the bidding process and for what is acceptable in your area.
