Default Another new start-up!

Well, it appears I'm not alone. I'm in the southern oregon region and am just getting started. Just me and my truck (no trailer yet, but it is a long bed). Purchased what I could new and bought everything else used or had on hand. My brother is in his 3rd year in another area of the state, so he has helped me out with a variety of stuff. I work a full time job that may/may not be facing some cuts. For now I am an afternoon and weekend man. I hired a graphic artist to do my logo, biz cards, truck magents, and door hangers. I've spent a fair amount of time and money on the distrabution of the hangers(about 600 or so far with 400 more to go). I've only got one call so far. For a one time job spraying a weed patch. I was hoping to get at least 1% return, but it's only been a week since the inital placement of 250 and a couple days since another 350 were placed. Looking at what to do next. There are A LOT OF GUYS OUT THERE!! I don't wan't to be a lowballer, but I would like to land a couple of jobs. Thinking I might do a newspaper add next. Maybe Craigslist? Weird folks on the ol' list though. Any advice on any aspect of the biz is appreciated!

Not involved in any social organizations. Have help the local church where my daughter goes to private school with a lot of fund raising so I might see if they do some kind of news letter? I'll uploade the logo and door hanger later. You already responded to my response thread. Getting the word out, but I have to be a little low key as I don't think my current job would like it too much, I may have to cross that bridge when it comes.

Thats a good idea. also maybe you could donate your services to do a spring cleanup around the church property? Plant some flowers? Something to get the word out about your lawn care business.

That's a good idea! They don't really have much lawn, just some trees and shrubs and such. I've attached the door hanger I've been using. My logo is at the top. Let me know what you think!

Ultimately with anything you do, say for instance with the church, you want to create a platform to show off and promote your business. If you can install some potted plants or do anything to jazz the area up, you will get recognition and that is what you want. You want people to be talking about what a nice job you did for the church or for this or for that.

Create a platform, attract attention and show off.

I like your door hanger. I think if you were to experiment more with it, I would say put the eye catching headline at top.

"SAVE 15%"

Have a limited time offer to get the customer to call.

Have your logo and contact information at the bottom.

Keep me posted on how all your marketing projects are going. I'd love to hear the updates.

Just wanted to check in. Door hangers were just about a bust. The cost to design, print, and disto them was pretty high and it generated......... 1 call. That one call turned into a 1 time job. Just a weed thatch that need to be trimmed, bagged, and sprayed. Got $175 for a 4 hour job, not bad for my first one. Next I am going to put out a newspaper ad in the service directory and join the other 10 dudes there. I'm also in the process of building a website and then putting some money into pay-per-click ads.

The church function was kind of a bust too. They told everyone to be there at 11am. Well, people showed up at 8am and most of the work was done when we showed up. Did get a little exposure with signs on my truck and walking/talking.

I have got alot of jobs from craigslist myself, the key is to be diligent with it, get your free ads in there before you go out each day, it pays off, I have got many jobs through craigslist and then from there usually a neighbor will see my work and come over to talk with me, if your not getting calls, try another ad, reword it etc..until you get bites..but never give up!

Get your local biz journal or news paper and ck the sections that have new home and property transfers and direct mail them most people will be looking for services that are new to your area plus u can see what they paid so u can decide if they have a lot of disposable income

Be very very careful when it comes to pay per click. Avoid yahoo at all costs when it comes to pay per click. They will screw you. Google seems to be fair, but yahoo pays people to click on your ads all day long so you have to keep replenishing your funds. I tried them for two weeks, went through $200 not a call at all, then I canceled. I put $100 on google adwords last spring and I still have more than half the money still in the account. So it does not really do to much. I have it narrowed down to the zip codes I service so in that sense its good.
