Have you seen the latest Dixie Chopper ad? They seem to be positioning themselves as a brand you won't be able to buy in a store like Home Depot.

Do you think that is a smart move?

How often do you buy power equipment from a big box store?

It is true. You can never find someone that wants to help you there. So why buy a product at a (home depot or lowes) store, where you will never get service at.

I think most people buy at large stores like these for selection and price.

Well you have to remember, the ones they're selling at home depot and lowes are home owner lines, the avereage home owner z goes for like 2500-3000 compaired to the 9000 for a commercial.

Their ad makes sense and a good point, but it doesn't really sell me on anything.

That is interesting. Especially since this ad is in a industry journal, targeting LCOs.

I am thinking most LCOs wouldn't purchase mowers from big box stores. Maybe trimmers though?

Home depot carries echo's, I've never looked at them there to see if they have the commercial models or not. I've read of some guys buying from home depot because it was 10-15 bucks cheaper, but I'd rather spend the 10-15 more and get it from a dealer who is going to take care of the warrenty work.

How often have you needed to have things serviced under a warranty?

When I bought my stihl backpack, I returned it a month after buying it because it was in the shop once a week. It was an early model br550 and it was junk, it needed the valves adjusted every 3 days because it was the new 4 cycle hybrid. The echo blower I was given to replace the stihl needed to go in one time, something about the carb was making it run rich and was fouling plugs like crazy.

I learned when I worked for the other company that you need a dealer that will stand behind you, we used to be in the shop probably once every 2 weeks because something would break, that was running 2 crews hard so it was expected. The dealer always had us right in and right out, that was what made the difference and kept us moving.
