Default Hey there, a new an d maybe the only one from outside the US

Hey there, just stopping by to introduce myself and say hello.

I am Chris, living in Germany, 40 years old and this will be my second season in the lawn care business and I am really excited about it.
2006 I started my Property Services with Cleaning private & commercial Residences.
At the begining of 2008 came the first customer with the request for lawn care, so I started the last season with this service.
This year I would like to grow up the lawn service for private homes (mowing, trimming, edging) with additional services: sweeping and washing walkways and later cleaning the gutters.

My first experiences with lawn care camewhen I was young. I did the lawn service for my parents a long time private.

My Equipement: a 21" push mower, a Dry-/Wet-Vacuum, an electric Blower and misc. hand-tools.
This year I would like to add a self propelled 21" John Deere Mulch Mower JS63V, a trimming-mower (DR or Ariens), hand-held Trimmer and Edger.
In the next two years a yard-vac (Billy Goat VQ1002), a 33" walk behind, an aerifier and finally a 4WD-Pick-Up or a light duty truck with a bigger trailer!

I found this forum in January watching the youtube-channel, looking for a lot of great advice on advertising and estimating. I figure there's no better way than to learn from those who have been there! So I am looking forward to all of the new posts and new advice to help me out.

Greetings from the other side of the ocean.

Hi Christoph,

Welcome to our forum!

What kinds of things have you been doing to promote your lawn care business? How is the competition in your area?

In the first time (when I started with cleaning services) I had only a Business Card with name and adress at the Front- my services at the back (House cleaning, cleaning household, property services).
In the last year I used additional a simple Flyer with these Services. My Business will be found by customers in the regional yellow-pages, at hotfrog.de, at google (using the business center).

The situation is hard: many start-ups around which are called "service around the house" (or Janitor / Caretaker) with cleaning, mowing and many other services. Some work alone, some have employees. Two bigger firms as special landscaping service. The trend in the last years was to start as that service. In 2008 everyone start a winter maintanence for private homes.

Because of this situation I am looking for a better way to promote my services to the owners of the many private homes outside of Frankfurt and the new home-owners in the early US Army Housing Areas which are now re-built with new private homes. Maybe more specified on mowing/trimming/blowing - added with Spring-/Fall CleanUp and Snow Plowing.

I am in the Chamber of Trade.
Access to Homeowners I get not through this organization.

I am a member of a Model-Train-Association and try to use the days we open for visitors. Also I am a member of some Forums like Shortview.de.

Found here in this forum some interesting flyers, doorhangers, postcards and interessting ways to sell my service.

But direct-marketing is in Germany more difficult as in the US:
Calling a private customer for selling services is here in my country not allowed.

WOW Now this is unique!

Do you build table top train set ups with landscapes? Do you have pictures of them? Do you offer this service to others?

I bet you could reach out to a lot of people by talking more about your hobby.

Maybe get articles about you in the paper? You could talk about how you make real life landscapes and model landscapes for your trains!

I'd love to see some pictures!

Yes, I built - but I donīt offer this.

In the old train station where we are located we built parts from the port of Hanau in the Scale 1/87 (H0). Some of us built a modular table train (LGB Garden Train).

again the port
the station of Hanau-Steinheim (at this time not ready) - the situation should show the station in the early 60s.

The same station in 2008

That is really fantastic! Do you do anything to show this hobby off at all on your website or in any other way? It could be something that allows you to connect with your potential customers. It shows your uniqueness!

On Social Networks: xing.com, Shortview.de, Myspace.com/chris_of, casch.unddu.de I show it in albums or in the groups. (not much results in the last time.)

on hotfrog I show only my services: www.hotfrog.de/Firmen/Asch-Property-Services.

On the next visitor day in my Modell train association (or club ?) I plan to wear my Shirt with my Logo. I plan additional to lay out some Postcards with the services (like jitys.ca - produced by plan-itgraphics.com)- e.g.: http://www.plan-itgraphics.com/Jpgs/PC8.jpg

and the Fall-Clean-Up - similar to this example:
