I was talking to a business owner the other day that also has a band and he was asking for ways to promote his band.

This is a local band that plays in bars.

One of the things they wanted to do was to sell their music on their site.

My view was, give it away for free on the site. Most musicians don't make any money selling their music anyway, even signed artists. They make their money on tour. Use the music to build a following. If people can listen to it whenever they want, they may want to show up to your shows more often.

Do you know of any local groups and have any thoughts on how they promote their bands?

Were you ever in a band?

I used to be in the local community band (it was more concert style).

Like you said, you have to give it away, that's why even the big name bands have the little sample cd's that had like 2 songs, to get you turned onto the music and buy the real cd.

They could even have free downloads from their website and then have a full cd you can buy, the downloads would get people interested, and we all know how big free internet downloads are these days.

I think this band in specific is so focused on making money on everything that it is working against them. Sometimes you have to give to get.

Do you ever wonder if you are missing an opportunity in your business for the same reason?

Actually yes I know I have.

A few weeks ago when I was doing cleanup's I realized I had forgotten why I got into this business. I had been reading so many other peoples thoughts online that I adopted someone else's desires and way of business. I got into this because I love working out doors and I enjoy the work. But somewhere along the way last year I forgot that and just thought $$$. I was looking at landscape maintenance jobs that were in the 1000-1500 range and saying for example "I don't want that, I'd only profit 800 from it". When really, I should of been taking those jobs just to get my name out there and that 800 is better then nothing especially for a new struggling business.

This week has been a good week for me though, first week mowing, gained a few mowing customers. Must be the positive waves

Very good point.

We all can get sucked into a negative way of thinking that can do us harm.

Good for you for turning it around and realizing what you needed to change.
