He's gotten enough media attention over the last week or so to fuel his business for 30+ years. If I were him and his business wasn't already named, "Joe the Plumber" I'd have it changed NOW. Then, I'd use pictures of McCain and Obama and reference them referencing me in my ads.

He could then go to any of the newspapers talking about him and use these stories as lead ins to his sales message.

The big key though is being able to convert all this attention into a benefit laden sales message and offer. Otherwise he'll get tons of attention, but it won't translate into sales.

I love those ideas.

I bet if he did that he would be this super star of plumbers. He could also do tv interviews to give his political views or write news articles. This could spring board him into an even higher level of public awareness.

Other than the fact that it has been publicized that the guy is unlicenced & doesn't pay his taxes....? If he unlicenced then he is also uninsured.
Yeah he could have taken this ball & ran with it, If he wasn't a schlep.
I wouldn't hire the guy. I think many will feel the same.
Take it for what it's worth... In any business it's better to be legit from the start. GO GET LICENCED & INSURED!

I try to read all of your posts. I have my required licenses but I have employee's do the work. They are not required to be licensed. From what I understand, neither is Joe since he's working under his bosses license. Joe the Plumber is me, my family and my friends. A hard working guy who hopes to own a successful business someday. He asked a legitimate question and is being crucified by the people who are suppose to serve our interest. It's a sad day when even business owners like us, think it's OK for the government and media to destroy a private citizens life to protect people in power.

Gary,

That's NOT what I am saying man, If the guy is not required to be licenced while serving in his current position/status, then fine, it's all good (he still needs to pay his taxes though). It does suck that this guy has gotten alot of unsolicited attention, much of it negative. Your right he only asked a question & didn't want any of this. In the context of this thread.... what I am saying is he could have turned this into a huge vehicle to get his own business off the ground. But if he lacks the credentials (License & Insurance) to capitolize on this once in a life time (more like a hundred life times) opportunity he has missed the boat. He could have quit the job he's at now opened "Joe the Plumber, Inc." Tommorow & been making that $250,000.00 a year on day one with this publicity! But since he has been brought into the spotlight & they made a big deal of his lack of licencing, & tax situation I think it might lessen the boom he could have had. So I'm saying let's just take it as a lesson. Keep your proverbial climbing shoes on so if you see an opportunity to make a break for the top you can take it & make the most of it.

I mentioned this in a post a year or so ago but the story applies. When my father was a LCO another company screwed a 90 year old lady, took a 50% deposit & never landscaped the house. It was on the news. My father thought that was aweful & that it spoke badly of all landscapers in the eyes of the public. He contacted the old lady, met with her & arranged to do the job for her for free, he was just going to pay for all the materials out of his pocket & install them. He didn't intend on getting media attention but the old lady called the news station back & told them how this nice man Chuck was going to complete the job for her for free. They ran another piece on the local evening news, with that several nurseries contacted the news station & offered to supply the materials for free, that Chuck shouldn't have to do it all out of his own pocket. They did another peice & an interview with my father while he was on the job & took a few shots of it after completion. My father got calls from people impressed with his generosity & wanting him to work for them for YEARS! IF he wasn't licensed & insured & that came out on the evening news during the follow up stories it could have destroyed all that free & unexpected publicity. Get my point now?

Lawnman,

You've hit the nail on the head. Joe could very easily quit his current job, start his business, get legit, and be well on his way to growing a solid business, but he's got to act RIGHT NOW. Media attention can be powerful, but you've got to jump right on it before the spotlight disappears completely.

Again, I'd make a bunch of copies of the USA Today or Washington Post or New York Times or some other huge newspaper that ran the whole 'Joe the Plumber' story, and use it as a lead it to a killer sales message and offer.

If done right, like your father did, it could pay dividends for years to come. Of course as you mentioned, 'right' includes getting the proper licenses and insurance.

WOW that is a great story! Do you have any news clippings you could post of the article? I'd love to see it.

Do you find yourself on the lookout for a similar situation where you could do a good deed and get media attention like that too?

Steve,

No I suppose I haven't actively looked for these type situations, though neither did my father back then. It just kinda happened.

I don't have anything to show you as far as news print goes as I don't think it made the papers. It was on a segment of the news the used to have called "Trouble Shooter". This one anchor man was an X Marine & used to go and confront *******s & businesses on camera who ripped people off. He'd show up at their home or place of business unannounced & walk in with a camera guy. Most of the jerks would refuse to talk to them & kick them out when questioned about their practices, some would argue their side of the story & there was a few times thay attacked him & got their butt kicked on camera. It was a great segment, I wish they still had it.
I'm sure my mother has it on tape somewhere in a box but I have no clue where.
