oil leaking from carborator

I have a johndeere js40. and there is oil leaking from the carb, any thought on what the problem maybe? dont want to send it to the shop just to find out I have to change the motor. the local mower shop has kawasaki engines for like $150 I may do better doing that

I also had the JS40 mower. I had to change the head because of the spark plug being stripped so yeah. Cost me 140$ in parts and 140$ in labour so yeah I suggest you go get yourself a commercial mower

I don't know that engine, but I was wondering, does it do that when it's off or just when it's running?

Also is that a 4 or 2 stroke engine? I am guessing 4?

yea its a 4 stroke. and it only does it while running.

justin I do have the commercial snapper now the Jd is just a back up I brought last summer from lowes becouse it reminded me of the snapper so much.

I can't visualize the engine in my head but I am guessing if the piston rings go bad, oil could get above the piston and make it into the carb. But I think a side effect to that would be it would smoke as it ran too. Is that happening as well or no?

Well when engines start blowing smoke, usually it means the oil is getting around to the top of the piston and being where it shouldn't. When the spark plug ignites, it's then trying to burn oil and it creates a smoky exhaust.
