We talk about what to do when there is no snow, this one lco was doing handyman work and then was taking some classes.

Businesses hope brown winter ends in black - Matt Thompson, owner of Fresh Cut Property Services, said plowing is almost a natural choice for making money during the off-season.
"It's just the easiest answer for how to pay the bills in the winter," he said.
Thompson, who lives in Raymond, estimates that his two heavy-duty trucks, complete with plows and sanders, cost more than $80,000. Although there's usually no problem paying the bills during the summer, "if it doesn't snow it gets a little tricky in the winter," he said.
During last winter's warm spells, Thompson found handyman work and went back to school to study horticulture. This year he's adopted a wait-and-see approach, but plans to work at a friend's heating and air conditioning company if the snow holds off.

Lawn care business tips
Plan Ahead!

After the previous four years of winter, especially last year, I started to plan ahead. Cut costs during the winter months, put more money aside, and put more customers on 12 month flat rate program. It has saved my butt many times.

I'm about ready to sell my plow and spreader we hardly got any snow last year and this year is becoming the same way. It's just not worth the headache, I would like to be able to go on trips during the winter considering I haven't been on one since 1999.

do you offer any other services in the winter or would you just prefer the time off?

I still do cleanups and brush clearing and sometimes fences which I have 2 to build next week. Mostly I just plan for my businesses.
