Back to another thread about adding gopher and mole control to a lawn care business, I think it is a natural and I train a lot of landscapers here in the Santa Cruz area.
Happy holidays,

Thumbs up Charlie C

Hi, Well I just started up a buisness. I was lucky to get a contract with a commercal company, BUT of course we have other bidder's who will do the job for less than HALF.....how do you compete with that? Esp when you have residential and other "jerk off" so Steve called it doing it for $15. Thats exactly what's happening. How should I compete? I don't know if I started in the right buisness. What should I do and how much should I start a clients yard? How would you compete with the man who is doing lawns for $15 and getting all clients. I can not afford to do it for $10, i might as well not do it at all. Please give me some suggestions OR should I TRY and sell my buisness?
Charlie

Can you tell us a little about how you landed your commercial contract? I bet this will help explain the direction you should be taking in the future.

Default Hello

Hi everyone. My name is Stuart and I am in the process of trying to take a part time extra money maker into a full time biz. I know this will be difficult, but I hope with hard work over the winter I can get enough accounts to make this my full time money maker. Any suggestions on when the best time to start contacting small businesses would be?

Hi Stuart,

Welcome to our forum!

It sounds like you are well on your way! What kinds of things have you been doing so far to attract the customers you currently have?

Could these marketing techniques be scaled up to attract even more customers?

Had a accident Steve while working at my last job. Been working for the same employer for 15 years without any sick time off.

Then I did my knee in. Had to have an ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction. Took almost 5 years after 5 operations before I got back into employment.

To be honest, it was engineered that way coz I took them to court getting a 6 figure number.

Iím one of these people that climb the walls if Iím not doing anything, but love been outdoors.

During the 5 years out of work tho, I was doing computers at home for people manly data recovery for people who lost their accounts or anything else.
That type of work is very few and far between and after my compensation came thru, I went out, bought a pro lawnmower and started advertising.

Within no time, I was in heavy demand and was beginning to turn down work because of the small equipment i was using.

Went out and increased my machinery totally, from hand blowers to Billy Goats to Back packs, Hedge trimmers with extensions rods so I can operate up to 12 feet with both feet on the ground, chainsaws, Rotavator, and of course Lawnmowers (7 of them in fact) ranging from mulucers to cutters all sizes as I deal with various size landscapes.

I found that if you have the right tool for the right, you can get it done in no time and then move on.

Commercial work started to come in, so I changed my van as I thought first impressions count and glad I did coz It has pulled in more work, also coz of the amount of equipment I have. Thatís pretty much so it up to date. Iím just waiting till spring now b4 it kicks in again.

There are many members on the forum here that have a very difficult time getting to this point. Do you have any advice as to the best way to go about getting to the point where you are turning away work? What steps should they be looking to take or follow? Where do you feel you learned all this from?
