My love for working with my hands started very young when I would work outside with my grandmother all day on her lawn, flower beds and vegetable garden. About 10 years ago I was ready to go full throttle into the lawn care business and let some very negative people in my life tell me I could never have my own lawn care business. So, I didn't but I never stopped working for fun for myself and my family. Then a very close friend of mine that worked for 10+ years for another lawn care company told me I could do anything I wanted to and I thought long and hard about it again. Then another friend who owns his own lawn care and landscaping business told me to just do it because he could see a light in my eyes when I talked about it with him and so here I am starting it for myself.
Best advice I could give and I consider myself new to running a lawn care business is just be yourself. If your yourself and being outdoors and working outdoors is in your soul then you will never be wrong in what your doing. Now that doesn't mean you won't make mistakes because we are all human. Go out there and sell them you. You are your company and that is what they are getting when all is said and signed.
So go out and go door to door and let them see you in all your glory. I go out knocking on doors anytime I can because there is so much more out there that I can do and help.
If you ever doubt yourself take some time off and relax and see what your gut tells you. Even if that time off is ten minutes in rush hour traffic while your enjoying a great song on the radio. I have been fortunate to meet some wonderful people so far in the lawn care business and I know they are gifted in everything I see them do.
Also, there is always something new that can be taught to you. Take classes if they are available and enjoy them. You never know when that knowledge will come in handy.
Lastly, I would always remind people to treat their customers how they would want to be treated if the tables were turned.
Hope this helps and I hope everyone has a great green day!!!!

Isn't it amazing how people around you can keep you from exploring your dreams? What ever happened to the people who told you, you couldn't or shouldn't start your business? Do you still associate with them? If so how has their perspective changed?

What advice do you have for someone who finds themselves surrounded with similar negative energy? How does one deal with that?

Very rarely do I speak with the people whom spread that negativity to my life. I look back now and wonder how then I didn't see how negative they were about everything. Life goes by so fast if you don't jump in and do what you know is right, then before you know it then its over. The worst thing someone can do to themselves is eat themselves up with regret.
If someone is out there everyday mowing lawns and making their dreams come true then more power to them. But if at the end of the day you don't feel fullfilled then something is definately wrong. Then would be the time to rethink what your doing.
Trying to break a cycle of negative people isn't an easy task. The best thing I could say is go talk to a complete stranger that is already in the lawn care business and tell them everything you feel about it (what I did with my friends). They will be the ones least likely to lie to you or be negative about it, to you. If your still not sold on the idea then maybe your not ready 100% to go into the lawn care business for yourself. You have to be able to go out there and hear "no" so many time you want to never hear the word again before that "yes" happens. You feel like a child on christmas morning all over again. That is what I love, that feeling but I love it even more after I see that feeling in a beautiful lawn that I help my client to create.
You can also talk to other professionals here on the forums, e-mail, instant message... so many different ways to talk to people so that your 100% before you take the dive.
Those negative people rarely speak to me. They know they did everything they could to hold me back and couldn't face up to that and say they were wrong. Even to this day they still say I am wrong and I will fall on my face and come back to them saying you were right all along. Well I have received enough "thank you's" to know I am right and this is where I am going to stay.

[/quote]Tell us what's next in your future plans? Where do you go from here? What do you feel is your next biggest challenge?

Well because CleanLawn is a new company we will continue working to gain more residential lawn care service contracts. Then as the summer nears its end we will push for fall clean-ups and offer fall specials for landscaping, aerating, grass seeding, fertalization,etc...In such a large area as Hampton Roads is in Virginia, working continuously to get the CleanLawn name out there so our customers and potential customers will know which company to call when they need any lawn services at all. I believe it will be at least two years before our name is known in the hampton roads community.
I will continue to take classes as they are available through Tidewater Community College and better my knowledge of this wonderful industry for both business and pleasure. I will encourage any future employess to do the same.
I am working on several different referal programs for CleanLawn. One of them when we gain each customer after our first service of their property, the notes I took during that service I put together in one of my homemade "thank you cards". I like to let my customers know my thoughts and give them the opportunity to decide if they agree with them and want me to futher making their lawn the best on their block by more services or that they might wish to persue these avenues themselves. I give each customer some of my business cards with their names on the back of them. Each card that is returned to me that bring CleanLawn a new client, that customer gains a $5.00 credit towards their services. There is no number to the amount of credit they can earn with us during their contract each year with us.
Another I am working on is for future employees of my company. Each contract that a employee brings me that he or she gained throughout their own means. They will get 10-15% from that total contract as a bonus each month. So, yes if on Friday Johnny goes home and on Monday morning he comes back with 5 new clients then Johnny gets a nice little bonus the next month. I feel it encourages employees to want to help CleanLawn to grow and it gives them something back for their added efforts.
But right now that is where I stand on the lawn service business. I know there are probably a million more things that I will do throughout the rest of the summer and another million I will research and create for the company but I want to make this the best lawn service and landscaping business in the Hampton Roads area and I know with some time and hard work it will be.
