This is going to be a blast.

Here is what we are calling the Custom Lawn Care Holiday Card Giveaway '07.

2 Winners !!!

What do you have to do to win?

- Simply make a new post in the Introduction section and tell us a little about your business and how you got started.

- Then tell all your friends in the lawn care industry to make a reply to your post and have them tell us about their business.

- The forum member with the most post responses will win 50 custom printed holiday cards compliments of http://www.cardscheaper.com.

- Then we will pick one of your friends who responds to your post and tells us about their business. The friend who has the highest post count will get preferential choice.

Simple enough?

Contest may end at any time so I would suggest you get on this now and start contacting your friends to respond to your post.

I made a few graphics and what you can do is put them on your web site, put them on your myspace page or post them on other forums. Make sure the image ad links to your post so you get credit for your friends who respond to your post.

To use the below ad use the following code and insert the url of your post.

I started out in early spring of 2004. I had old john deer riding mower 42 ' deck and a borrowed 12ft trailer. I went to pawn shop and bought a used weed eater, and a old style 3 wheel edger. I gas up the truck started riding the streets looking for yards to mow. I did not know about "Lawn Care Forums" on the internet, when I started. I think this fourm would of helped me if I had knew about it.

One thing I can remember is that I wished I had got my customers under a contract that first year in business. I did not realize how important it was until winter arrived. When I did not have much income coming in and it was then that I realized the yearly contracts are important.

Another thing I can remember was my first commercial bid. It was scary and I did not have a clue on how to bid the job.So I decided to just bid the job high and not worry about it. That was what I did and I won the bid. I cut that property for 2 years.Until I moved here to new county and started over.

Another thing I wanted to say is if your just starting out try to put 50% income back into your business. Now after all these years I have built up a lot of equipment. Because when I went from that John Deer 42" riding mower to a small 42" (ZTR) I found out that it cut my time in half on all my jobs I had room to expand my customers. So if you are thinking about upgrading to a ZTR I would suggest that you do so when you can afford to do it. I now own 3 ZTRs One Ford 1310 Tractor with bush hog,box blade,rake,5ft finish mower, and auger. 4 diesel trucks alot misc hand tools. Utillity 4x2 ( Rover ) for clean ups.

I found its very important to keep double weed eaters , edgers , back pack blowers. Reason is you will need them incase of break downs. Trust me its embarrassing to tell the customer you can not finished there lawn because your weed eater or edger is broken.

If you found any of this interesting let me know. Check back tomorrow I will add to this post on further things I learned as I started the business. This will be great Opportunity for you new guys to learn from the old timers mistakes. Maybe you will not have to learn the heard way like I did.

Rodman,

You are now in the running for the holiday cards!

Of all the things you could do, why did you choose lawn care?

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

I kinda feel into it. I had my horses on someone else property and I had to maintain it. So I bought that riding mower and I was in between jobs. I thought to my self why dont i look for few yards to mow sense I owned this mower. Thats how I got started. I started finding jobs one after another I have been doing it ever sense.

I've already introduced myself in another thread

My introduction

I'd just like to say i'm about to start my 3rd year in business in the spring..

I will be expanding my business from summer full time to seasonal full time this means i will be able to serve my customers from May to October instead of May to August

I'm pretty sure I will be getting more contracts this year since I can offer a bit more than last year.

Just have a tip for the little guys out there like me.. don't try to expand to quick otherwise your gonna run out of cash and fail.

I hope i've inspired everybody, I've got GopherHaul episodes on my site now

Good Point.

It looks like you and Justin are the winners. Justin, you might have a problem because you live in Canada and she only wanted to ship in the U.S. so maybe at worst you could pay the difference in shipping.

Let me know how this works. I will send you both a PM.

Send pictures of what you get.
