Backyard biz seeded with early ambition - Darin Brockelbank remembers dragging an old push mower and carrying a three-in-one weed trimmer to his first lawn job in the neighborhood. At 14, he didn't do such a great job for the $20. "I didn't have the expertise, then," he said. From that beginning, the now-22-year-old has built Metro-GreenScape, a Charlotte lawn and backyard-design company with 10 employees and annual revenues of more than $750,000. Brockelbank's story is atypical of most 22-year-olds who might be wrapping up college or looking for their first real job. He works 11-hour days, has two kids and a 22-year-old wife, who works with him at the business at 13601 S. Tryon St. He's grabbed a niche of the design market in Charlotte too small for larger companies and too sophisticated for traditional lawn care companies, he said.
