Saw it... bought it... loved it...

One of my "secrets" that few people know is that I was a ref for a while for a local wrestling group. For those of you wrestling fans out there, I have referreed matches with people like Abdullah the Butcher... Tommy "Wildfire" Rich... and "The Phenominal" AJ Styles, just to name a few. The behind the scenes of this industry is not what you'd think... even the "pro" side of it (the "big boys" like WWE and TNA)... these people (until they REALLY hit the big time) don't make very much money at all. I got paid $20 per match to ref. If the match was 30 seconds or 30 minutes, it was $20. I took a few bumps... got thrown around (and out of) the ring on many occasions... and actually trained to be a wrestler for about 6 months. It's a hard life, folks... harder than any other professional sport except MMA (mixed martial arts (like UFC)). Your body takes a LOT of punishment for not a lot of money. Typically, the average percentage or wrestlers in small circuits that make it to "the big leagues" is about 2%. These people go a LONG way for VERY little money in order to entertain their fans.

"It's fake!" ........ no, it's not fake.... it IS staged, but it is NOT, by ANY means, fake.... these people work together to entertain the fans... they already know who will win... they even know HOW it will end.... but from the time the bell rings until that finishing move, it's all "on the fly" calls... they're talking to each other in the ring.... sometimes through the aid of the ref. The same guys that are in each other's faces in the ring are the same ones who get into a car TOGETHER and ride to the next location TOGETHER.... the REAL part of it is the physicality... it's HARD to be a wrestler... when someone in WWE gets "majorly injured" to the point that it puts them out of the ring for a month or so, 90% of the time, the injury is a ruse to let that wrestler have some time off for whatever reason. Time to rest their bodies... time to recover to 100% (because, trust me, on any given night, a wrestler may only be operating at 70-80% because of a "hidden injury" or because they are so sore they can't sleep at night very well).

People, let me say this... if you have NEVER seen this movie, watch it. It gives a LOT of insight into how shows are put on, but moreover, it gives you a lot of insight into the PERSONAL lives of wrestlers and how the industry that keeps them on the road for 200+ days a year wears on their home life.

Are there any pictures of you being a ref? That would be awesome to see.

In this movie I was shocked about the part with Jake the Snake Roberts. OMG what a poor poor soul! When he said 'what do you do when the person you hate most in this world is the person you see in the miror.' OUCH! He has so much stuff going on in his mind. Poor guy! I wish someone from the WWE would have reached out to him and offered him some psychological counseling.

I couldn't believe he was smoking crack too! Jake was an amazing wrestler!

And then when Mankind is fighting the Rock and the Rock hits him over the head with that metal chair and splits open his head like that in front of his kids! What was he thinking bringing the kids there! It's things like that, that can scar kids for a long long time!

But I still love to watch wrestling. It's just too bad they have such a rough life.

Unfortunately, I have no pics of my ref career... lol ..... I used to have a ton, but they were all lost in a move.... I've met a good many wrestlers...

Yeah, Jake had it rough... but he wasn't the first, nor (unfortunately) will he be the last.

Mick (Mankind) Foley is a tough old dude! Rock Just went a little crazy.... went a little overboard in the moment... and I agree, if Mick knew he was gonna get a chair to the head while being handcuffed, he shouldn't have had his kids at ringside... That's something.... if it were me, I would have explained to my kids what happened at the match, then if they wanted to see it, watched the tape WITH them. They didn't need to see that live.

I still watch wrestling, too... all the time... Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.... I miss WCW. I miss the OLD ECW...

OH!! Do you ever watch Pros vs Joes? The new season starts coming on this Thursday at 11pm eastern time on Spike TV!!!
