Which are you?

Do you tend to want to learn things on your own or do you prefer learning from others first before you attempt something? For instance as winter is rolling around, I keep thinking how I never took a skiing lesson and I probably should have. LOL but I gotta tell you there is still something exhilarating about sliding down the side of a iced up mountain. There are too many other things I do which are that crazy. Maybe if I had more training I would be better at it, but I still just love learning myself. How are you when it comes to this kinda stuff?

Lawn care business tips

I'm one of those do it yourself types that prefers to learn on my own. Seems to be a family trait to some extent. By the same token, if I can't quite comprehend what I am trying to learn or perform, I no longer have any qualms about asking the right persons for assistance. As my mother would say, stick your pride in your back pocket. If something does not interest me, I have no desire to learn about it. Anybody else feel that way?

I agree... if it's not something I wan to do, why learn?

For example, I've never really had the desire to snow ski, so I've never tried to go to learn... but if there is something that I want to learn, I listen to advice and simple instruction, then I do it on my own from there...

When I was about 14, my brother lived on a lake... his kids (my brother is 20 yrs older than me) wanted to go out on the boat... we went out, and he had the idea that he would let us kids water ski... first my neice... then my nephew... then my other neice... then it was my turn... I had listened to my brother telling them how to do it... I had watched their mistakes... I got into the water and recited to him the same instructions he had been telling his own kids... he nodded, then counted to three and throttled up.... I stayed up on the skis all the way around the lake for about 20 minutes.... then the boat started to run out of gas... lol

I remember when I first started with computers. Windows 3.1 with micro-soft dos. I remember I payed someone 25.00 to install windows and dos on a computer. From then on I starting learning to fix my own stuff. With trial and error I learned to build and program them myself. Then I got into networking and wiring cat5 network cable,and building networks. That lead me to starting a mobile computer repair business in the late 90s. I did that for while. I went to college and got degree in computer science. Got my MCSE, MCSA, MCSD, MCP, Now there is not anything I can not with a computer. I also learn on my own how to build Unix systems, ( linux ) I learn how to use MySQL,run and install and configure apache webserver , That is what a linux server uses to serve your website bind9 dns , php, and plain html. I can take a lap top all apart fix it. anyway i guess i have gotten off the subject a bit, YEA i had to learn most of this on my own. as for the linux and unix all that was learned by trail and error.

It's a fascinating topic because at least from my perspective all this entrepreneurial stuff and business stuff is so much learn it as you go and very few will be able to or want to help you.

Maybe it really is the crazy ones who tend to go for this kind of lifestyle.

If you have friends that run their own business, do you find they are similar to you in this manner or do they differ from you?

I'm thinking that a can-do attitude goes hand in hand with the notion of learning or doing stuff on your own.

Being told that I can't do something is a challenge that I find hard to ignore. Proving others wrong does have a certain satisfaction to it....

It wouldn't be unreasonable to think that most of us on this forum fell the same way. That's we we enjoy what we do, and on our own terms.

I like doing on my own too but I also like to find a mentor who can show me what mistakes to avoid.

This summer I was mtn. biking with a few friends. One of the other guys and I were pulling jumps and dropoffs each trying to out do the other. One of the girls in the group asked why guys always had to out do the other. Which was funny that she asked that because 90% of what guys do is to impress girls. Am I wrong?

Don't you think that's our nature? We are genetically hard-coded to figure stuff out on our own and we love a challenge. How can I do this better? How can I go further, faster, higher? When you think about it, this is how we got to the moon. Would we have made it to the moon if we hadn't been challenged by the Russian's sputnik?

Oh, BTW, PMBlair and LandonKade, do you know there is a snow ski slope in Mentone, Alabama? If I go locally, I go to Gatlinburg, Tennessee but it's fun to know there is another ski slope further south.

Stone Mountain, a State Theme Park in Metro Atlanta was going to do a ski slope this year... due to the drought, however, they decided against it.

Kinda makes you wonder how in the world they get the snow to stay frozen in the summer, huh? (I know... they probably only do it in the fall/winter)

.....and yes, I agree... I think we all do things to impress women... think of it like this: we're the most sophisticated animal on the planet... but all the other mammals do it, too... primates especially... take, for example the silverback gorilla... HAS to be the "big one" ... beating his chest and fighting with others... heck, even BIRDS do it... the male is more brightly colored than the females to attract them...

I can't speak for women, but if I were to speak for men, it's the adventure that is the driving force. How can I challenge myself further, what more can I learn.

I do think this is all part of the challenge.

My guy friends who are the happiest tend to be the ones who have an infrastructure set up where they can experiment and explore.
