How does everyone keep track of where your new customers got your number from so you can track your marketing profits and which ones to use again?

I have to admit that last year when things got real busy I kinda slipped on this. So my plan to fix it this year is to ad that info to each customers job jacket in their file. That will allow me to gather the info when time allows, so I can get a clear view for next year when planning my advertisement.

Hi Kim,

This is really a great question.

My take is keep it really painfully simple or you won't keep up on this. When the season gets busy, it is easy to put this off and when the season slows down, you will be wishing you did keep track of it.

How do you keep it simple? Create a really simple spreadsheet. Print out the spread sheet. have it right near your phone and then just check off when someone calls you cause they heard of you from the newspaper. Or they heard of you from a referral, or from a flyer. If you have different tracking codes, make sure you have them on your spread sheet. Then when you have time, take the count from your printout and enter it into your spread sheet and print a new blank spread sheet.

What's your view on that?

I was just reading something about putting tracking codes on all your ads. I think that using the easiest form is the best, will probably go with the spread sheet then try to ad to their job details when I have the time. Between This and cleaning my summers go by very quickly.

Isn't it amazing how, if it isn't set up to easily track this kind of information, you just won't do it! I think that's how we all are!

MS Outlook with Businesses Contact management is the way to go!

You can set up your marketing campaigns and track them by customer - new and old and by what advertising method you use.

print reports, track expenses, follow up and track profitability.

For me, this works out fantastic!

if we could only convince the fine folks at gopher to sync up with MS Software- you could have a seamless suite of business products to really run a business.

I keep track of everything, I write the source (newspaper, phone book, word of mouth, walk up, online) on the top of my copy of an estimate or proposal because I always keep those. 2 nights ago I sat down with my wife to crunch those numbers, My findings were suprising. about 65-70% of my business thus far has come from 1 source & at an advertising cost of just over $10 per customer! Pretty cheap. I tracked how many from each source, What was the average amount spent by the customers from each source too. Sometimes an add in one place will bring several small spenders & while another brings a few big money accounts. Different publications have a different type or class of readers!

I'm thinking of creating an excel sheet so we can track all these advertising expenses so we can calculate the % of amount of money we bring in per customer through that advertising

Of course it will affect future marketing, I have a new add going into affect there asap. I can't belive we did so well with an add I only ran for about a month & a half. I kick myself in the ### for not realizing it earlier.
