Don't underbid.

If you make circle/hoop with your arms, a cu. ft. of mulch will probably spread 2-3 of those. And most bags are mulch are sold in 2 cu. ft. bags. And a bag of mulch costs $2.50-$3.50 at Home Depot.

If a bed needs mulching, and it measures...let's say...5ft wide by...20 feet long, that's 100sq. ft.
If you spread 2in thick, 1 cu.ft. will spread over 6 sq. ft. So you would need approximately 18cu. ft. of mulch. Which is 9 bags, which is ~$30 in materials. Your rate should be $80-120 for that job depending on weeding and other factors. You have to go to the store and buy it, you use gas, etc.

I would never buy a bag of mulch. Unless there was less then 10 cubic ft needed.

Even if they needed a half yard of material it will still be cheaper to buy a yard in bulk. Then just go twice as deep or bring the rest home.

It's his very first estimate...I don't expect him to be hooked up with all the bulk mulch yards in town.

You need to know your operational costs per hour. You need to estimate to the best of your ability, the amount of time the job will take you. You also need to know how much mulch you will need.

Try experimenting with the online mulch calculator here. Scroll down until you see it. It should be very helpful figuring out total mulch needed for the job.

Bring a pen and paper or a smart phone/iPad what I do is write up everything they want and I tell them I will have a full estimate done by tommarrow but before I leave I tell them what I think it could be around. This gives you time to make calls and find out prices and decide all cost. Because when doing mulch you might not think about anything extra that will be needed like rental equipment or even paying for delivery if you don't have a truck big enough. My estimates show everything on them from my cost of each supply down to my labor cost.

Talking

Here is what you do Tony, call someone else in the business in your area, ask them to give you an estimate for similar work around your house. Then plan your bid from there. That way you get prices for you area. Here I get 75 dollars a yard for mulch installed including some prep work on the bed. Your area will be different
