Default Fertilizer Treatments

I finally got an answer to my dilemma. I couldn't find the information on the Kansas website for business licensing and certification relating to fertilizing treatments for commercial and residential applications, and based off of information I read it appeared I would have to take courses and get certified, so I was under the impression that I wouldn't be able to offer fertilizing treatments to customers. After sending a few emails I finally got the answers I needed and found out some awesome news, which is good because I was really bummed out about this particular service. Anyway Kansas is a unique State where if you plan on offering fertilizing treatments that deals with weed control, then you have to take the course and State exam to be certified; however if you aren't going to be using a fertilizer with a weed controller then you don't need to take the course and be certified. So realistically I can do fertilizing treatments as long as they don't contain weed control ingredients. I'm looking for some insight as to what type of fertilizer would be good to use for all seasons and be beneficial for customers' lawns, but at the same time isn't going to cost a mint to purchase so I can still make a profit from offering this service to my customers. Also incase anyone doubts this is possible, here are the emails:

Attention to whom this concerns:

I have been looking everywhere for a form that I am looking for and I have been unsuccessful on finding it. I am looking for an application to apply lawn fertilizer to residential and commercial properties. I will be owning a small lawn service and will be providing fertilizing treatments to my customers, obviously I will not be anywhere close to purchasing tons of fertilizer, so I am very confused and I have been unsuccessful on finding the appropriate application to fill out to be able to perform this service. Could you please direct me to the appropriate application, and also let me know what I will need to include to complete the application? Also are there any classes that I need to attend? And how much does the application/classes cost?

Here’s the Pesticide Business License Packet with information, instructions, and application forms. Depending on the category(ies) you may not need the technicians pages. Category 3 & 7 require the tech stuff be completed. Categories 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, etc you can ignore the tech information. Ignore the 1 or 2 blank pages….I copied both sides and some forms were only one sided. Let me know if you have further questions.

I won't be applying any pesticides, just mainly doing turf management, seeding and fertilizing treatments, so which pages would I need to fill out and would I have to study anything course and take an exam? Sorry for the questions, but I just find it a bit confusing on how to just get a business license to be certified to apply fertilizer to a customers property

James…..the answer to this one question will determine it. Does the fertilizer you would apply have any bug or weed control chemicals in it or is it JUST fertilizer? If it doesn’t have anything that kills weeds or bugs (like grubs, etc.) then you will NOT need a pesticide business license and will not need to test.

Its just plain fertilizer, so just straight fertilizer I don't need to be licensed to apply that?

That is correct.

Is there a local store you are going to be buying fertilizer from? Have you visited them to see what they suggest for the grasses in your area?

Steve, I have been comparing brands at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, and a local nursery here called Family Tree Nursery. I've priced alot of Scotts fertilizers and some fertilizers by Espoma and Sta-Green. Big comparison on prices, but I'm unsure of prices versus product quality, as I said I want to use something that is good, but at the same time isn't going to hurt the bank so I can still make a profit providing this service to my customers, but also use something that's a good product for the customers' lawn.

Where are you located and what kind of grass are you feeding? Walmart Lowes and home depot.... now that's all junk. Scotts is junk, all of it. I wouldn't put it out if someone gave it to me.

You need to find a local hardware store, like mom and pop or a plant house and see what they reccomend. I buy my fert at $14 a bag. But its the best stuff going, the company who has their name on it is local, I buy directly from them. The stores that do carry that same fertilizer sell it at 29.99 a bag. I undercut them buy it at 14and sell at 23. But then I install to my customers at 45, per bag.

I will upload some pictures later of my wife's moms yard. It was in serious need and not it looks better than any of them on the street.

I live in Johnson County, Kansas one of the richest counties in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, there aren't alot of ma' and pa' shops around here, you either have True Value, Home Depot, Lowes, or Wal-Mart, and the only nurseries we have that are good is The Grass Pad and Free Tree Nursery (Which has all sorts of plants and garden soil, mulch, etc.) Common grass around here is fine fescue, tall fescue, with some yards having kentucky blue grass, bermuda, buffalo and zoysia.

I fully agree. Get mine from Texas A&M that is for my area. Only bought 4 pallets but it is good stuff.

As I said, I live in a rich county and not aware of any fertilizer locations except the stores I've listed, so I'm looking at brands that are reasonable in price but still a good product to use. I appreciate the input on where you get your fertilizer, but no such area exists around here, most lawn service companies are buying bags of it from stores, and that's what my post was indicating - I am needing help with brands.

What you might want to consider doing is testing these different products on your lawn. Take pics of the different results they each provide. Then you can use that information in your marketing. If you find a product that is not used in general by your competitors that has good results, it can really make your company stand out.

Anyway Kansas is a unique State where if you plan on offering fertilizing treatments that deals with weed control

Sorry to inform you but most states do license the application of fertilizer, how ever the state EPA does regulate the application of pesticides, and weed killer is considered a pesticide. (this is from the guidelines from the FED EPA)
