You have to either go with a strato charged engine or a 4 cycle mix technology to pass epa now. And Redmax has the patents for the strato engines. But I think even redmax is going to have a hard time soon with the EPA as I personally think we will end up going battery powered with trimmers like the core.

The trimmers you were using were all MTD. Therefor you had the same trimmer the whole time.

What I use is below.

Stihl
FS55/FS90/FC95/km110

Husq
L322&326

Redmax
TR2350S

As far as Stihl the 55 is kinda weak for commercial work. The 90 will cut through anything but is a bit on the heavy side.

The Husquavarnas seemed like good trimmers but I burned the 322 pretty quick.

The Redmax is the lightest but not the weakest. Redmax seems to do best with power to weight ratio. Its a smaller engine trimmer but has held up nicely.

The only Tanaka product I own is a hedge trimmer and from the looks you couldnt tell it apart from a Echo. Not a fan of Echo at all but I do own 2 Echo hedge trimmers.

Ryobi is complete junk as far as lawn equipment goes, that is true.
Never used Craftsman, but I assume it's the same product pretty much.
Don't get a 4 stroke trimmer if you can avoid it. There will be times when you have to turn your trimmer on its side or up-side-down, and that doesn't work so well with oil lubrication on 4-strokes.

I have a Toro commercial power head. $100 from Home Depot. I've been beating the crap out of it for 2 years and it still runs amazingly. When this one ever breaks, I'll probably get rid of the whole power head/attachment setup and buy an Echo trimmer for $200 or something. **** curved shaft though, for real.
Just can't justify upwards of $500 a trimmer that's probably going to get stolen, or run over, or broken for reasons other than quality. My $100 powerhead does the exact same work as your $500 stihl, with 1/5 the worry and liability, even if it only lasts 3 years or whatever.

That's one thing I don't understand when people buy stuff like this. Do you really have a guy use a string trimmer for 3 years? I don't. I keel them 2 and get new ones. Have a couple back ups. Its a tax wrote off and always good to get new equipment. It runs better and looks better on your company. Do I care if my trimmer last 5 years.... no, so why spend $500 on it when I can buy 2 that will last the 2 years I need them for $550 a piece. When you buy your guys a truck do you buy a $40,000 Chevy diesel or a $20,000 dodge gas burner? The Chevy has the power and will run longer. But you gotta keep it 8 years to get your moneys worth. The Chevy will last 5 then you get a new one.

Maybe I read number differently.. I don't know.

People are buying them because of need. You show up with the tool thats needed for the job. If you want to trim grass and flowers then youll be fine with a home depot trimmer. It wont matter if its Ryobi or Toro and you will be replacing them. If your clearing brush you need something that will cut through a forest. I seen people put a saw blade on a cheap trimmer and the shaft shatter when it hit a 1" sapling. The same goes for attachments. As soon as you put a power broom or edger on less then 30cc engine it bogs down.

My equipment is abused. People put in the wrong mix. Throw them around. Always start up and never needed a repair. They all been running for 2-4 years strong besides the husquavarna that died in 2.5 years. I bought them all used too. So who knows how long they been ran like this. I NEVER PAID MORE THEN $100 FOR ANY OF THEM!

Commercial trimmers start around $220. The only trimmers selling for even close to $500 are brush cutters. So if you spend $100 every 2 years your spending more then you should.

Yea, I feel the same But do want something a little more reliable. Think I'm going to compare the prices on the echo and stihl next.

I use 3 of these myself. They work great. I got an Echo to upgrade and it stopped working after 2 months (no spark)

Stihl is my only choice for all my small equipment! They always do what their supposed to for me period. middle price range, top Quality. like a fool, I haven't done anything to any of them in 3 seasons and they still start and run great.

Couldn't agree more. With all those attachments they have for it....you could be a solo operator and get just about any project done....
