Default New Business

I am new to this lawn service. So new I don't have any clients. I have been working at my current job for 14 years. But over the last few months I haven't enjoyed my job anymore, alot of personal reasons. My wife and I came up with the idea to start a lawn business. I love working in the yard and outside.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure to get clients and doing estimates for jobs. I would greatly appreciate some help in getting clients and just getting started.

Make a good looking ad and post on craiglists twice a day.

Hey There! Welcome to the forum. I am new as well here. I am 17 and had started my business over the Winter. What I have found is an eye catching flyer and short but informative text. People love to have a person with a story and a little about them. They like to hear what will separate you from the competition. Just go to a printing shop or if you have access to a printer, print a couple hundred at a time and hit the mailboxes. This will be your best bet. Although this has been my personal success and I can't vouch for others. Offer free estimates as well, this is always a plus when customers see this!

Happy Bidding!

Its a federal offense to put anything without postage in a mailbox. This is why you see guys using door hangers.

Over posting on craigslist is a good way to get your ad ghosted. It will appear like normal but only youll see it.

The best cost effective way to gain clients is a good website.

I did not say opening the mailbox and placing anything inside. it is not a federal offensw to simply put a flyer in the news paper box. or put it on the flag between the mailbox and flag. so that is completely legal.

It actually is illegal. I found this out the hard way.

Quote:
Postage must go through the United States Postal Service and be delivered for it to be valid postage and therefore acceptable in the mail receptacle. A flyer cannot be placed in a mailbox after putting a stamp on it unless the item was actually mailed. According to Sect. 508.3.1.3 of the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM):

"No part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail."

It is a federal offense to touch someone else's mailbox where YOU do not receive mail unless given permission from the resident of the home who receives mail there.

Say your buddy and his wife get a divorce and he sends you to their house to retrieve his mail from the mailbox. He no longer resides there and you have broken the law.

So no its not OK to put the flyers anywhere on the mailbox. Am I saying don't do it... no because I do it. But I accept the risk and will play dumb and say I didn't know.

Under no circumstances would I ever say its not illegal, when stopped and questioned. Thatsvlets them know you are either arrogant or you did some research and are unable to properly interpret the law.

Welcome to the forum!

You will find alot of useful information on this site to help you with starting your lawn service. My first suggestion since you've just started, would be to take the time to take the Lawn Business School located on the homepage of this website in the upper right hand corner next to "Design It Yourself", this offers alot of good and useful information. I am starting a lawn service myself, and I was able to learn quite a bit from the information and alot of my questions were answered. Also feel free to ask any questions on this forum relating to you website, logo, a job bid, etc. and everyone will give you good advice and suggestions. I have learned quite a bit from this forum, and alot of members on here have helped me with many questions I have had. Read through all the threads and you will learn alot more. The success of your lawn care business depends on being educated, the more you know and learn the more successful you will be because you'll understand what you should or shouldn't be doing with your business and what you need to be doing to perform your services, make a profit, and earn a living. Much success to you my friend.

It is a violation to put anything into, on, or attached to any mail receptacle, or supporting structure. Don't get caught doing this. You could be fined up to 5000 dollars plus 10 dollars per mailbox, or post that you put something on
