Default What would be the best move?

I am putting this here because while I have been at it a few years I still consider this a beginner thing as I am still very much a beginner. As some of you know I have been contemplating my options for this year. I am still on the border of the idea of continuing or not. I have 2 MAJOR issues that I think are the biggest players in succeeding right now. The first one is out of town unlicensed low ballers, the 2nd is my back. I mean I can put in a 20 hour day and keep up with the best of em but my back will suffer for 2 weeks after that. I am only 34 years old and should not have these problems at such a young age but I was careless with my back and now I pay the price. Weedeating really kills it every time. in 3-4 wee I will be getting it taken care of "if it's fixable" but I am feeling very skittish as I have not yet started my advertising and the weeds and grass are growing....well..... like weeds here now. In your oppinion what would be the best move for success in these conditions? What I am looking for is advice to consider should I decide to give it another year.

Back issues are a big deal. If you can get treatment and it gets better than you could keep going. If not your probably going to keep aggravating it and hurt it worse, which in my opinion is not a good thing. So if you think you can go on without a lot of pain and damage to your back than you should keep going if you want, if not it may be time to look at doing something else.

Somethings cause more irritation to your back then others, perhaps if you have helper delegate the things that are tough for you to him. I did that often when I was having Achilles problems.

As far as the low-balers go, its a war of attrition, you have to weather the storm. Provide the best quality service you can, and don;t be afraid to ask your loyal customers for more work or to introduce you to their neighbors and friends, I find asking for the introduction come of better then asking for the referral.

Some of my best clients have come from simple introductions.

Yeh the back thing is probably the worst part. Low ballers have been here forever, the back has been hurt for years but just really started bothering me last year. If it is something that can not be fixed then I have no plans to go on. My father did that, he was a contractor and now that he is retired his medical bills are crazy and he can't hardly do anything because he killed his back so bad and I have no plans for a retirement like that.

I had a helper a while back but fired him and was always skittish about rehiring, He use to say stuff like "I get paid by the hour so the longer it takes me the more I make" I am not sure he realized he was saying that to the boss lol. Maybe that is the ticket though, I just need to find out how to find good help is all.

One tid bit of bad news is I went to check on the one property I still have the other day, It is a vacation home near my parents, I stopped in to visit my dad and he said the home owner and his son were out there about a month ago cutting it down, that has me kinda worried as that job was the only thing keeping me hanging on. I plan to call them this weekend and see if they still plan on having me do the work or if they are going to do it themselves from now on.

I guess at the end of the day it's best to do nothing until I see the back doc in 3-4 weeks? I know by waiting another month I will miss out on more work then I already have but I would hate to start taking on work and then toss in the towel if the back doc gives me bad news.

i would suggest getting a riding mower or something that doesnt bother you much, have a helper do all the grunt work, and pay em 10/hr. you be the supervisor and in charge of the mowing. you got alot on yourplate as is with running the business. lineing up jobs, paying for equipment, stress, paperwork licensing, fees, etc... you shouldnt be working as hard as everyone else, but some advice given to me is dont have your employees do something you wouldnt do yourself, so show them your not afraid to do it, teach them how then let them do it.

I would rather have the issue helping clients find a new maintenance person after I find out from a doctor I am done with landscaping. Then waiting and potentially not having enough business there to support myself with I hear I'm still able to work.

Hint on finding a good employee, I hired my pizza delivery kid, because he was miserable in his job. He started part time with me and kept his job evening job. Within a month he was my go to guy and I got rid of two others, quit his job and worked 40+ a week for me the rest of the season. Fins someone who hate there current job and likes to be out side, pay them as fairly as you can and your of to the races...

With all these great ideas, what are you considering doing now next? Is it possible you could offer services that wouldn't aggravate your back further?
