Default Sick of being ledgit!!!!!!!!

With the season just around the corner and estimates starting I have come across one of the competitors that is offering lowballer prices and services that I know for a fact are not insured and even state licensed for . One customer told me that this certain company is trowing in a free fertilizing with there service. I informed them that I do not do fertilizing since I am not insured to provide that service. They thought is was weird and was not aware the any insurance or licenses is required to do this service.

One thing I told my self when I went into business was I was going to make sure is am a legit company. I don't have a problem with lowballers as we all know what happens to them.

How do you handle these situations with your company?

you could report them. All it takes is a copy of their ad.

I had it done to me in my first season because the word pruning was to vague. DEP threaten me with a $5000 fine. I went and got my arborist license real fast.

Or for $50 you can higher a army of teenagers to show them its your turf.

in my state you can not even advertise application services without displaying your license number in the ad with the offer.

the same holds true for the licensed home improvement contractors license number.

if you do patios, walls, walkways or anything other then lawn mowing and you advertise for that and you don't have a license number in your ad the state will rain down hard on you and you don't need no one to rat you out, they actually check ads for the number.

Turn their asses in, then contact the pizza place and inform them that they are not licensed and you would be more then happy to make a deal on their advertisements lol

Can you implement some of this into your marketing and educate the potential customer of what they need to look out for when hiring a lawn care company?

My son and I have discussed this many times. We have reported many that are doing weed control applications and fertilizing without the proper licensing. The Dept. of Ag representative talks to them but it does not do any good . Until they are fined to the max amount allowed by law they will continue to work illegally. To my clients, which are approached by these people, I let them know they are not licensed which probably means they do not have insurance and if they kill something while doing the work it won't be replaced by the people doing the work.

I am want to post an add on Craigslist educating people on this here is what I want to post let me know what you think.

READ BEFORE HIRING ANY CONTRACTOR!!!!!

One thing to understand if you hire someone to be on your property you are responsible for their actions. If something were to happen while on your property you will be responsible for them if they are not carrying the correct state license and or insurance.

1. Let say they are cutting your grass / lawn and a rock get thrown into the road a hits a car, you will be responsible for their actions. That is where you would need their insurance to cover the damages. If they don’t have insurance you will have to cover it for them.

2. They apply fertilizer to you property and it is a bad product or applied wrong and water runs off to your neighbors’ property and kills their tree. Guess what you will not only be responsible but could be legally in trouble for hiring an unlicensed contractor.

Any legit company would be more than willing to provide proof of any state licenses and proof of correct insurances. You will see many businesses out there will avoid showing or even bringing this topic up to cut operating expenses due to poor management of their company and don’t have a problem putting the customer at risk.

Some things to consider before you picking the right contractor.

Any questions about a contractor carrying the correct license call the Ohio Department of Agriculture for proof.

If you are a legit business feel free to copy this post and repost it.

I sub out my fertilization, the company I use is reasonable and I just mark it up 10%. However one of my potential clients didn't like that I couldn't do it because I'm not licensed. Even though I had the low bid when they accepted a more expensive competitors bid because they wanted one contractor for everything. Wasn't a huge loss but 10k accounts don't grow on tree's either...
