Default Sinkhole

Had a call today something about a rotten tree trunk caused a hole in the ground.

I get there see a 2ft wide circle thats 2ft deep. I look closely and the ground seems hollow after about 2-3ft of dirt. I took a rake handle was able to press it all the way into the ground in several spots.

Not sure what is going on here. I told the guy I can dig a few feet deep with my skid to see if theres anything in there or how large a hole it is but chances are I would have to rent a mini excavator. I referred him to a few excavation companies that are more experienced with digging. I did tell him if its simply digging it out and refilling I could do it for less then the others. I made sure to tell them the most expensive excavators I could think of

Now I'm wondering what caused this? They think it was a root ball or something. I think it could be anything from a well to poor job filling the yard in. The house is elevated with a retaining wall in the backyard that leads to a marsh like area.

Tap roots can go quite deep but I would suspect a sinkhole. Depending on how long it took to happen. If it took years to get to this point then I would suspect root ball. If it happened over the last 30-90 days then I would lean towards sink hole and you hwant to stay away from that.

I am staying away from it. From the surface it could be a 4x6 area but I have a feeling its huge. I think this guy might be paying foundation money to fix this.

I have never been able to stick a rake handle 4 feet deep in someones yard. I think Atlantis might be down there.

I have seen this before and the cause for this one was when the lot was excavated for building they buried quite a few stumps from the trees that were taken down...They should have been hauled away but they dug a huge hole and buried them....

After a few years and the stumps rotting along with being a somewhat wet area, the ground gave way....

It didn't open up like the one your describing but it was a heck of hole....

A 4' deep hole makes me think there is a big issue here with the septic system...I would stay away from this one.....

I saw this exact same thing for the exact same reason. The homeowner called his insurance company, who was kind enough to send someone out to look at it and determined that
1. it was not covered by insurance (surprise)
2. It was such a large area that several large trees, a concrete block wall (fence) and the foundation of the house were endangered
3. It took almost a week, about 25 thousand dollars to dig out the rotting stumps and trees, and fill the hole with dirt.

I wish you took some pics of this! Who knows what might be under the ground there.
