Is this right?

So If a mower is $2000 and I know I can get a motor for $1500. I say to myself is $3500 worth it for this mower?

When you do this, does it make sense to buy used or does it push you to buy new?
Using that formula will push you to cheap used mowers because of the unknown. A dealer can sell a used mower with a 100 hours for 3 grand cheaper and it can be a basket. In that case the new mower would be better. If you buy that same mower for 6 grand cheaper and have problems youll still make out. You could put a new engine, hydraulics and drive motors in for the money saved.

Heres a recent purchase for a skid steer.

Price Paid $2050
Lowest price found $4500
New $19500
New engine $1650

So I can buy it used and put a new engine in it for cheaper then the next lowest price. On the other hand I can buy it for $4500 and risk having to put a new engine in.

No matter how new something looks doesnt mean it wont have problems. I bought some beat up looking stuff that was trouble free and some shiny stuff that was garbage.

Steve: Any place that you would recommend for the seat replacement. I wouldn't need to tape it. Either a new seat or bottom seat cushion. It's like someone that was 550 sat on it for 2 straight years and all the padding is flat as a door.

Have you found that the mower being an issue tends to be the biggest gamble of buying used? Is that the biggest part that can hide problems or are there other issues you make sure you look out for?
