If you could sell your lawn care business and get into another business, what would it be?

This former lawn care business owner started up a store that creates gourmet sauces and spices! Isn't that interesting!?

Chili family spices up business - Founded in August 2006, Onion Creek Farms, 15 Cutter Drive, produces gourmet sauces, spices, dry rubs and pickled items. Onion Creek's nearly 25 products are currently available in select gourmet markets in Rochester, Boston and Fort Myers, Fla., as well as online at http://www.onion-creek.com.

His first barbecue sauce, called "Pig Sauce," was created for a family pig roast.

He eventually enlisted his two children, Matthew Minoia and Michelle Peter, to help him operate the business. Now, daughter-in-law Kerrie Minoia, son-in-law Bob Peter and six grandchildren all take a hand in production or giving advice for the business.

The family aspect of the business is exemplified in the company's logo, which is based on a photo of three Minoia cousins — Jake, Matt and Joe — fishing on their great-grandfather's boat.

Before Onion Creek, Minoia owned Turf 'N Tree, which provided lawn maintenance services in Rochester and Syracuse for 13 years. The business was sold to True Green in 1989.

Lawn care business tips
Manufacturing is a sweet business once you have everything in place. Like who's going to buy it (Walmart), make it & ship it.

One you have the idea and sell it, you just sit back and cash the checks. Good for him.

I already retired once! and now Im a professional kid, i get to play in the dirt and mow lawns, best part I get PAID to BE a PROFESSIONAL KID!

Why would I want to start another business, when I'm done with this one in 10 years the only thing Im doing is traveling and my hobbies, I'll only be 52 and fully retired, young enough to spend every dime of my kids inheritance. This way they wont have anything to fight over. LOL.

Rob,

This sounds very interesting!

Can you tell us a little about this business? What got you interested in starting this? What kinds of things do you sell and why did you get into it?

My brother came up with the idea. After he explained it to me a few times we bought some sample products from a wholesaler in China to test the product and the sales and it worked out.
So we just bought a bunch more from them.
I don't want to say exactly what it is because its so easy to do but its in the electronics category.
I got into it thru my brother. He's 16 and very smart. We go half on everything.
We are looking at every way to sell products on the internet. Like google, ebay, craigslist, etc.
If anyone else knows where we can list products for sale let me know.

I have gotten out of the lawn care business and in to the tree service business. I still come to this forum everyday because of all the helpful info and all the great people. Its fun to participate in the discussions, and the tree business isnt much different than the lawn care business.

Justin, you should talk to Tony at AMW Graphics. You never know when he would like to expand up into Canada!

Do you think you would enjoy running a sign shop?
