Greg's Lawn Care is on a distinguished road
Default Managing a Crew? Need advice or tips

My name is Greg and I am 16 years old. I am a hard worker and started my own lawn business 3 years ago; however, this year I really expanded my lawn care business due to the fact that I can drive now. I am a one man crew and drive everyone using my truck. Transportation and equipment is not an issue.

Today when I was mowing a yard, a lady across the street approached me (doing tree work) and asked about my lawn business. She asked me if I would be interested in managing a lawn crew for her and gave me her business card to call her back later today. What do I need to know possibly before calling her back just so that I am educated or don't get conned into doing something not benefitting for me.

Yes I am 16 years old, but I will not be taken advantage of because I am still a "kid."

Thank you all for reading this and the replies to come.

Can you explain more of what this means? Is it that she wants to hire you as a crew manager for her lawn care company?

What ? This lady has a lawn crew that she wants you to manage ? Sounds fishy. Can you give more details ? Does she own a mowing biz. Way to go. Wish I started at your age. Don't forget about school.

Seems a little odd.

Does she want to hire you, or make you a subcontractor?

Will you be using your equipment?

-

I can understand that she saw you alone, and figured if you run your own business, smaller than hers, she can buy you out, and use your 'leadership' and 'responsibility' to help manage her company a little bit.

As for running a crew, do as little talking as you can. Don't make friends if you can help it. Give them duties.

Guy1: Back mowing
Guy 2: Front mowing
You: Trimming

Whoever finishes mowing can grab another trimmer. The last guy with nothing to do, can use the blower

It's efficient. If anyone is left standing without a task, have them clean out the garbage from the truck, and grass the trailer.

You need to put on this face when you speak to her It is funny you have a business and she wants you to work for her I bet you do a good job and she has seen your work. You are 16 so dont act like you know it all just wat she wants you to know get my drift? Sometimes I act like I am confused when approached by someone this makes them explain themselvs and feel important, let them speak first till thay have talked themselvs in a circle (thay always do) After that put on your troll face and roll with it LOL!

Pretty neat she wants you to work with/for her! I would find out all the details and go from there. You must be doing a great job. Keep up the good work!

Steve: From what I understood from what she said today, yes. Once I call her I will find out more.

Godslapper: I agree with you about it sounding a little fishy; however, I do not know anymore additional information. i will find out more soon. Yes, she owns a tree and lawn care business. Don't worry I won't, school is my number one priority.

CHEESE2009: I am not sure on both of those questions. Thank you for that great advice!

JLM: That is a very good point and way to approach things. I will defiantly try it now. Thanks.

Branchoutshrub: Thank you. I checked out your website; it looked very nice!
