Default Made my own Striping kit

I have a Scag Freedom Z 61" and while it strips on it's own fairly well I wanted to get a striping kit, but at $400 I just couldn't do it yet. So I made my own, I'm not a welder so came up with a bolt on version that works pretty good. The Freedom Z has two holes that were drilled in the motor surround already so I just used those. I went to Home Depot and bought a heavy rubber floor mat used in bars. It's 36" wide and I can get 3 strips out of it should it tear. Then I bought some L-Brackets, a couple flat steel brackets and a piece of perforated alum. angle. Bolted it all on and this is what I have. It really works preety good and until I can afford the $400 spring loaded one this will do. I'm pretty pleased that after just 3 mows the stips are starting t show pretty good.

So far, like I said its only my third time mowing with it, so going in one direction and then the other and back, I think it's starting to do a pretty good job for a homeade one. I think the $400 roller would do better but this is what it is right now. I still need to cut off the long "ears" so I don't catch on anything but it's working pretty good.

I spent just about $55 total, but $30 of that was the mat alone, and I bought more bolts than I really needed so I probably had less in it than that!

I was just thinking about custom striping kits... Cool man!

Anyway, why don't you weave a bar through the last set of holes for extra weight if that's what you're going for?

I'm trying to find designs for my zero turn that uses a broom head. All I've got is a hitch that's vertical, so I need to plan carefully lol.

Party on!

That is very cool!

Now that you made it and have tried it out, what would you like to alter about it, if anything?

I think just a heavier version is what I would change. I think the weight of the mat is decent but if I doubled it up, at least at the bottom, it might show up better on the lawn. I like that it's cheap and does a fair job at striping, however I still think the springloaded one that is sold would work better, just not ready to fork over $400 for it till I get more jobs lined up.

Nice job on that.

I may have to use this idea and modify it for my Toro push mower!

Last year I had to replace the flap on the back (It's called a "trailing shield") and it cost me $26!

That is a great idea! My Zmaster is the only machine without a stripe kit and you are right about the price of a roller kit****RIDICULOUS! Great Job!
