Default what a feeling

Finished up a bush removal job yesterday that I had been putting off till spring and lets face it here in WV its seems to be spring things are turning green already .

The Bushes I removed had root balls about 3 feet in diameter and pretty heavy luckily there was a place on the property to dispose of them a bit through the woods and roll them down a 150 foot steep hill
( to steep to walk up or down ).
Well first day on the job I used my truck and it was just a pain to lift the root balls into the bed of the truck because of weight,so I figured use the old JD lawn tractor and trailer i have .IT worked great until the unloading part.

Backed the trailer to the edge of the steep hill and started to roll the root balls out and was enjoying watching them roll down the hill to the swamp below ,but then the last one things get really interesting .
Roll the large root ball from the front of the trailer to the rear of the trailer at that time all the weight is behind the axle of the trailer which lifts the tongue of the trailer into the air which is connected to the rear of the little JD lawn tractor this in-turn lifts the rear wheels of the JD off the ground .
Can you see where this is going yet ??
Well the rear wheels on the JD are where the breaks are so with the rear wheels off the ground there are no longer any tires that have breaks on the ground and down the hill the tractor heads.

Thanks god for old barb wire fences as there was one strand of barb wire that managed to snag the deck of the tractor and save it from going down the hill .
After my heart started beating again i got out the chains and got the truck to pull it back up the hill ,thankfully no damage but did get to actually use my 4wd on the truck this year for the first time since we have had no snow . the pictures do not do the steepness of the hill justice

LOL! That's awful!!!!

Glad everything is still in good shape! Sounds like something I would do... something I'd do several times before I learned my lesson.

Party on!

I have used blue tarps to drag shrubs and other things across the lawn.I rolled the shrubs onto the tarp and tied it to my truck and dragged them as close as i can to the dumping area and then just rolled them the rest of the way.You just have to make sure you have a lot of the tarp tied to the tow vehicle so it doesnt rip.Heavy weight will just rip the metal eye hooks out on the tarp.I twist the ends of the tarp until its like a rope and then tie a piece of rope onto the tarp and then tie it to my trailer ball...

WOW! Good thing you weren't on it!

What's your view on how you could make such a job safer in the future?

block the wheels on the tractor or use the truck bed to haul the waste to the hill side perhaps not take jobs I really do not wanna do any way ,but after a long snowless winter the wallet was hurting so took it .

This is a great learning situation because it's easy to see how this safety step could be overlooked. I am just glad no one was hurt and your equipment is ok too.

We have seen on here where mowers take tumbles down hills and are never the same again.
