Default Safety First - Always

As the business owner, you really need to be looking out for everyones safety. You need guidelines and rules on how to safely operate equipment. An employee getting hurt on the job is bad business.

Review the article below. Can you imagine allowing an employee to clear a jam while the machine is running! What a shame. It was all preventable too. I hope we can learn from this.

OSHA fines landscaper - An Amherst landscaping company has been fined $48,000 by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration for violations following the death of a worker last year.

Taylor Davis Landscaping, also known as Northeast Environmental Solutions, of 577 West St., Amherst, was cited in the death on Nov. 15 of Matthew P. Kosloski, 23, of Palmer, who got caught in the rotating parts of a mulching machine while trying to clear a jam.

OSHA's inspection found that employees were allowed to clear jams while the machinery was operating. Safety regulations require that the machine has to be shut down and the power source secured.

Lawn care business tips
I hear more and more accidents about chippers. They are not forgiving. Both them and chainsaws

How is it that these chipper accidents can't be more prevented? Why aren't there more kill switches that have to be held or stood on to shut the machine down fast if needed?
