How do you know what fertilzater to use, do I need to do a soil test? Is it better to do it after the first mowing of the season or before?

Lawn care business tips

As a generic rule of thumb, I do a full spectrum fert in spring and fall and nitrogen throughout the season.

A soil test done properly by your county extension will help especially if you have a problem lawn that is not responding to normal methods. Phosphorus and Potassium for root growth and Nitrogen for leaf growth is the norm for most if not all plant material. Please someone correct me if I'm generalizing too much.
