Full of blooming orchids from owner Karen Gramnell's Englewood greenhouse and primitive art and sculpture from exotic places like Bali and Thailand, the store is an oasis of calm and beauty.
"It was a hobby that turned into a business," Gramnell says of the orchids that bear her name. In the early '70s, she and her husband, who owned a landscaping business, would travel to places like Mexico during the winter.
Intrigued by the vivid orchids she encountered, Gramnell got permits from the Department of Agriculture to bring some to the United States. She has been in business ever since.
You probably won't find Gramnell at her 13-year-old store, though, unless you get there when it opens. She spends most of her time tending to orchids at offices and private homes as far away as the Hamptons and also does arrangements for parties.
