Default Getting Business!??

Hello,
I am not totally new to the lawn cutting business, but before i only cut a few lawns. I recently have got fed up with my current job, and now i am looking to grow my mowing business. I have been reading around and i just get many differnet answers!
I orderd myself 600 fylers and 500 business cards. My issue is, I dont know when to put them out.? I put about 30 out but the next week we happened to get 7in of snow. There still is a little bit of snow on the ground, i just want to know when i should put them out. Also what is the best technique to putting them out? Or should i staple my business card to the flyer?

Thank you!

Lawn care business tips
Use the business cards to hand out to everyone you meet, you will find that you need more. I have left them in public places such as restaurants, grocery stores, senior citizen centers etc. Any place that has a buliten board that you can attach a holder to. Arty on this site has a bunch of products that could be of use to you...

http://www.marketingholders.com/

As for when to start handing out your advertising, I usually begin about 30 days before the grass begins to grow. In my area that is usually 3rd week in April, so I begin around April 1st.

Heh. I was about to ask where the heck he is that has SNOW on the ground, but just remembered it was snowing HERE when I took the dog out a few hours ago! Will we EVER get warm weather here?!!!

And yeah, Craigslist has EXPLODED with new lawn care ads in the last day or so.

I think it's TIME!

(I haz my ad almost complete!)

As for the flyers, I don't know what to say - start distributing them. If you don't someone else will. Look around - the stores are filled with lawn and garden merchandise. People ARE ready for spring! (and the grass IS growing)

Start talking to everyone you know and make them all aware of your new business. You should be able to get some word of mouth buzz created through friends and family.

I live in a duplex rental unit and there are about 200 total units in this complex. It is not the most upscale place, but the landlord says he is "Always" getting asked if he knows anyone who mows lawns. Well I went home that day and printed up a bunch of business cards and gave him some. I am going to be using the template and make up fliers as well tonight. It is the first and rent is DUE!!!! I need to get them to him so he can put them on his counter first thing Monday morning. I believe the fliers and business cards will work > at least in my circumstance. If you have a sub-division like mine you might try that with your flyers to see if it will work for you. Good luck.

Tom,

That is a great idea. I bet getting flyers out to all the residents or even magnetic business cards would really help you land a bunch of lawn accounts.

Keep us posted on how all this goes.

I was thinking, what about printing up nice looking flyers, and asking the manager(s) at the local seed and pet stores if you can leave them on the counter by the registers. It's a service that the store doesn't provide (mowing, trimming, etc.) so you wouldn't be competing with the stores customers. Even better, would be to get the manager to have their sales assoc. put a flyer in their customers bags.

You could do this with business cards and a business card dispenser as well.

Keep us posted on how this goes.

Default Got called about my flyers!

I have been out the past few days putting up flyer's on the side of mailboxes. Well today a lady called me, and said "I am a representative of so-and-so subdivision and we dont want these flyer's here. you need to come back and pick all these up or you will be fined." funny thing is...I live in the subdivision! its only about 20-25 houses and we don't have an HOA. nor any covenant protections against solicitations. I called the local post office and they said that as long as they are not in the mailbox that it is OK. I am personally putting these out so I know they are not in the mailboxes, I am putting them on the sides where the flag is. I am just trying to get some business closer to home, but I also don't want to aggravate my neighbors close to home. what do you guys think. I called her back and spoke briefly with her, but am unsure about what to do from here.
