Lawn care business tips
Can you offer any power washing? Or maybe pool closings? Gutter cleanings? Possibly ask your customers if they need any other home improvement services.

I live in nevada, about 1 hr from vegas and we have been in the 90s for a few days now but we are going back to the 100s this weekend but for us the mowing season never really ends it just slows down. The cool season grass grows while the warm season grass goes dormant. We overseed are warm season grass with cool season grass. But around here the leaves dont start falling till around thanksgiving and all the leaves are down by around christmas time so by janurary we finally get all the leaves up and then in feburary its full stream ahead we start fertilizing and spraying weeds and getting ready the spring season are winter here is warm are lows get down in the low 30 sometimes the 20 but then the highs are around 50 -60 so there is always something we can find to do. are lawn mowing does cut back like are weekly jobs go to biweekly and biweekly goes to every 3 weeks. ALso this year i have gotten involved with some companies that take care of bank owed homes and that is turing out be some work. The company calls us and gives us 13-30 houses to go and mow/weedeat and in vegas the yards are very small most yards are desert landscaping so we weedeat the weeds and blow and go to the next yard. And we been doing this about every 2 weeks. On steve's post he said maybe do some home repair but becareful about that, some things require having a contractors lics and business lic to do that. In nevada if you get a business lic for lawn maintenace thats all you can do, just mow yards. If you trim trees you have to have a tree trimming lic on top of the lawn maint lic. and if you fix sprinklers, & valves you have to have a handy man lic on top of the tree trimming lic and the lawn maintenace lic. That also goes for dog pop cleanup, powerwashing, hanging christmas lights, & doing anything but lawn mowing requires a lic for each item and sometimes the lic cost are more than what you might make doing that item. But i would try to do leaf raking I charge like i am mowing the yard the customer gets the same lot of time as if i was mowing the yard but i blow the leaves into the grass and pick up with my mowers. and i get all the leaves picked up by around janurany and then able to relax a bit and work on the weekends mowing the cool season grass or doing the stuff i was to busy to get to during the summer months and still make about 2000.00 a month.

That is amazing there are so many licenses! What a way to kill entrepreneurship! Does this ever bother you or get in the way of your business? How do you deal with that?

Lots of ideas there. More ideas welcome. Thanks everyone.

Not so many licenses here. Might be a problem for some repairs, handyman, or minor construction.

Wish I could get that year round mowing. I make the most profit from mowing. There are only a few yards that have cool season grass. The bermuda will go dormant in a month or so. The weeds will hang on for a while and the leaves will keep me busy some.

4500 feet up so it is hot but it is not as hot as your places. There's a little snow most winters but nothing to shovel.

That's insane in Nevada. Probably need a license to air up your own tires. That kind of stuff is bad all around not just for small entrepreneurs. On that license/regulation note: I would like to hire people next season if I can but too much tax, too many regulations, too much paperwork, other costs, just too much trouble. So, duh, taxes and regulations = unemployment.

It's no wonder our economy is in such a bind right now. Regulators love to regulate and create more regulations. They seem to pay no mind to how small business really works.
