Default Trucks

So I am doing some window shopping looking at replacing my Ranger.

Why?

Transmission is acting up. Im getting a whopping 12 mpg towing a 3000 lb trailer full of lawn equipment around. Truck also needs a tailgate handle, power window motor and tires.

I looked at a 2010 regular cab F150 today with a 4.6 V8. Only problem with it is it cant tow over 5500 lbs. The tractor I have access to, to do brush hogging or other work weighs 4000 lbs. Doesnt leave much for a trailer.

It looks like the 3v 4.6 can tow more. But with my usual load of 3000 lbs can that motor do better then the 12 mpgs I am getting now?

Then I looked at a 2011 F250 with the 6.7. Again, regular cab, auto, 4x2. Base trim level. But kinda apprehensive of the new motor.

2011 Dodge Ram 2500, 6.7l Cummins. Regular cab 4x2 long bed bla bla bla.

Think any of these will give me what I want? I really want to have a auto transmission.

Also all the trucks I looked at have 8' beds.

Lawn care business tips
If I were you, Id look for a F-150 with a 5.4 Triton in it. I have one in the 07 F-150 and I pulls my 2000 lbs UTV, a bunch of camping gear, and other misc. items no prob up canyons.

That 6.7 is a fast bugger! My buddy went over to the Ford dealer the other day and took one for a spin. He said it rides as nice as is 05 F-150. I wounder if they may put that 6.7 in the F-150 frame??

We also use Rangers and I am shocked at how well they are holding up. If you want pulling Power and excellent mileage we also have a Ram with the Hemi engine, 2500. It pulls all but our largest excavator with ease, and that is up to 11,000 pounds. For the big excavator I have a deal with a company here that moves it for me.

Personally!

I would go USED, NOT NEW!

In this industry you are going to be loading/unloading debris and equipment.

You can probably find a decent pull truck for about 3000$.

I have two used trucks that i wouldnt give up!

650$ have done a tune up and normal fluids over the last few months - 1987 Ford F150 - Inline 6 (122hp/286ft/lbs.trq) with a granny 4 speed manual (pulls 6000lbs like there is nothing behind it) - averages 23mpg on the highway and 18 in town. Keeps up with traffic with my 5000 trailer behind it.

4300$ Just got it but, have records leading upto 4 days before i purchased it - 1991 Ford F350 Dually 4x4 - 4speed auto - super cab 4dr (family transportation) - pulls anything you put behind it, passes everything but a gas station (haha).

I would NEVER buy new unless it was being used strictly for personal use or i was a big enough corporation we could afford a new vehicle.

Just my 2-cents

Matt

If your looking for better fuel mileage I doubt you will get it. Those EPA numbers never seem to be all that accurate for real life driving.

As for the Ford dont know much about it myself but the bigger motor will help keep you mileage up with increased power to pull.

The Dodge I know about. You would love it my dad has the 07 6.7L. Pulls anything and mileage stays about the same till you start getting into the 15,000 lbs range. Hes gotten anywhere from 18 empty all the way down to 9-10 with 25,000 lbs with lots of wind drag. The only thing I would warn you about with going with a diesil is increased part cost and fuel cost. Its an industrial motor and part cost accordingly.
