Ok so I did a fire break last year. I used a weed eater, charged $20 per hour, burned up said weed eater. So I made a little over a hundred bucks and it cost me three hundred to replace the weed eater so needless to say I took it in the tail for the job. Now this same client a week later wanted a quote on chipping a bunch of wood up. I looked at it while I was there and figure its a couple days work "several years of apple tree trimming" Anyway I quoted him $35 per hour to run the chipper. He declined the quote and that was that. Well now he called back and wants to do it but says there is twice the wood to chip now. My chipper is down, I can fix it but it costs money so should I still to my $35 per hour? Dose that sound good for operating a small 5hp yardman chipper? Oh and on top of that he wants the stuff hauled off this time as well, last time he just wanted me to make a pile so he can spread it out.

A thought I just had. Maybe it would be better for both of us if I charged him to just haul the stuff off, take it back to my property, chip it up and use it for mulch. Any ideas on this?

I would suggest sticking to the $35/hr however your client is requesting an additional service therefore you should explain the addional charge of $x.xx for removal of the wood chips.

Thats what I was thinking but what would a decent charge be for removal? Round trip from the shop to his house is about 2 hours, its about an hour each way and with my dodge 1500 I am looking at about 10 trips at least. What would be a good per trip charge? I am thinking its best to just bring the stuff to the shop and shred it there. That way I am not hauling equipment on site. Then I can also sell it for mulch I guess.

If you are just using your pick up to haul it away it's going to be too time consuming and therefore time expensive. $35/hour sounds good to me. I think it's best if you haul it away and either dump it or chip it like you planned. then you can sell it as mulch.

If you don't have a trailer... rent one so you don't have to make so many trips and it will save you time. A big dump trailer here runs $65 for the whole day. If you rent it on a friday, you get it for the entire weekend since they don't open on saturdays; if you get it from united rentals.

That basically costs you one trip (2 hours @ 35 = 70). But you can really load it up.

Option 2:

Rent the trailer since he wants them hauled away anyway and charge him the rental fee as a disposal fee. Either way you will save a lot of time using one of those.
