Default Starting a Lawn Business

Hello,
I am currently looking into starting a lawn care business I am located in Eastern Cincinnati. Is it to late in the year to start one up in the year ? Also with the current economy how many customers have you lost from it ? How do you estimate your lawn services per yard to be competitive with other business in the area ? What is the average gross profit on residential yawn services ? Ive found Zero degree mowers used with low hours that will help fight the cost. What is the expected investment to start out ? The business will consistent of my brother and I. What am I leaving out and what do I need to consider ? I'm very business savvy and willing to put the work in I just need to have the information so that i know what I'm up against.Any advice I would deeply appreciate it.

Thanks

Townneckmowing,
WOW thanks for the speedy and very informational reply. One question how do you estimate the cost of yard mowing so thats it is competitive but yet profitable ? What tips would you suggest for me ?

Thanks

If you want to know the going rate in your area, call up as many local lawn care companies to give you an estimate to care for your lawn, or your parent's lawn, or your friends' lawns. This way you will have the different estimates from the local companies and you can see how much they are charging. You can then base your rates accordingly.

To start a business, register your business and get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) From the www.irs.gov.

Then pass out your business cards/fliers/door hangers and let everyone you know that you are providing lawn care services. post on craigslist. build a website. www.webs.com lets you build a free site.

Before you purchase mowers and equipment, look at the lawns you will be targeting to mow. If they are large and not fenced in, then a zero turn mower would be good. If most are fenced, make sure you can get a mower thru the door. Usually a 36'' walk behind will work for any type of lawn.

good luck, any more questions just ask.

Hi Bearcat,
when I first started doing this I was really bad at pricing jobs. After you do a few jobs you will get the hang of it. Also keep your eyes and ears open...what are other guys charging in your area.

Also if you are just starting out don't go out and buy expensive equipment. I stated out with a craftsman 22" mower and a weed eater weed whacker I got for $80.00. I still use a craftsman 22" and weed eater weed whacker today.
Next year I'll be looking in to getting more pro equipment.

Good Luck Bearcat

Process?...
I live in the Town Neck area of Sandwich,MA., google it and you'll see the area i live in. I think the name of the company helps a lot, I have had customers tell me that.
On my cards it says Town Neck Mowing "Your Local Lawn Mowing Service".

I also have my truck parked out in front of my house with my sign on it, I have seen so many cars stop and write down my number.

Get a web site and get it on the internet, this will help you get customers.

I have 18 lawn mowing customers...It took me 3 years to get that many and I do all the work myself. Next year if I get more customers I'm going to have to get some help.

Happy to help.
