Lawn care business tips
Hey Shooter
I need some more info on this to help you out. Has the grass been mowed yet this year, and also, is it really tall and thick or just needs an average mow? What I do is charge an initial cost for grass over 8". This is usually 50% of what I'm going to charge for a normal service. For example, if I bid the lawn at $35, then with the initial charge included, this makes the first mow $52.50. Now if the place is just a terrible mess with grass knee high and limbs and debris all over the place, I would definitely charge double for you efforts. Explain to them that first of all, the tall thick grass is hard on your equipment (blades, deck spindles, belts, and motor) and secondly, it will take double the time it would normally take to get it cleaned up and look presentable. You can also do this another way by charging them a cost to mow, and then $25/hr to clean up limbs and debris with a $25 minimum. This way, you're guaranteed to make profit, but it can also bite you in the butt if there's a ton of heavy lifting, but only a few pieces. Let me know what you got and I'll try to help you out. If at all possible, a pic would be nice.
