Air compressor intake

Bought a used air compressor. Great shape except for the air filter was not on it. Should I replace the intake or take it apart and clean it? Anyone work on air compressors? Its a 20 gallon belt driven.

You can always try cleaning the filter and use it. See how it works. Then if you don't feel there is a good enough flow of air, replace it. Sometimes these filters fall apart when cleaned so experiment and see what happens after you clean it. Keep us posted.

This is actually inside the pump where I see some corrosion. The filter wasnt on it when i got it.

Can you fit it back in there or is there a problem? I wonder if the previous owner could be contacted to find out why it was removed.
