Default Square Foot Estimation

Okay, so I have been doing some research online and reading books and alot of them say ''charge by the square foot'' well, this sounds good and all but they don't exactly tell you how to do it? I know it has something to do by multiplying the sq. ft. for a yard and throwing in your overhead or hourly rate or something. So I was wondering if this method is recommended and if so how would you do it ???

For example: such and such lawn care's business
over head:15,000
hourly rate: $40.00
sq. ft. of yard being estimated: 12500

thanks
Adam

Your overhead, is that per year? You would spread it out over all the lawns you have, does your $40.00 per hour include any profit or is that your actual cost? What size is your mower(s) and what else will you be doing on the property?

Generally speaking we charge per square foot but it depends on which mower is being used, how many feet of trimming and I take into account any other work that needs to be donw to come up with a rate.

Those are just figures I pulled out of the air...But if $40 was my hourly rate, It would include my profit and overhead, yes. I would be mowing, trimming, and blowing[to start out] I have a 21'' and a 42'' rider.

I did some rough numbers assuming 12,500 square feet, time to load and unload, used your 42" mower, 300 feet of trimming and blowing, total time 36 min for one person.

Can't really tell you what to charge per square foot as I don't know your costs, insurance, maintenance, amortization of the equipment etc.

Hi Adam,

Have you played with the online business calculators to come up with a rate you need to charge?
