It's not a road I want to go down, if the word gets out I did a 100 foot french drain for you for $2,500 because your daughter was a friend of my daughters, well does that mean if your neighbour's son talks to my daughter then they get the same deal?

I just don't want to go there and if they have to hire someone else then so be it, I generally beat other companies on excavation and landscaping simply due to all the gear we have, we can do it faster with the same or better quality. And I always beat the wood cutting and chipping companies as I don't have the overhead they do.

I realize this is an old thread but I found it while looking for something else.

Here are some things that I have run into.

-I got 5 new customers because of my social network. One is my barber, 2 of them I work with, 1 of them I met at the gun shop (and the gun shop permitted me to put a card dispenser on their counter!), and the last one is an officer in another department.

-I raised my labor rate this year and have already been asked if there is a "cop special" so I decided I would give them last years labor rate. I typically tried to give them a good deal anyway and figured this may be a good way to do it. It shows good will and most likely will bring me enough extra work to offset it. And this will strictly be "cops" and not friends of theirs, etc.


Networking....

-your local "social network" I believe is probably the most important network you will ever find. I think if I were really trying to go full time this year I would be wearing hats, shirts, jackets, or whatever with my business name on it to attract that attention. And like Andy said, ALWAYS carry business cards with you! ALWAYS!!! Consider buying some of the vehicle card holders from Artie. I really think I will do that myself.

-Don't forget your mail carrier! Heck, he knows everyone in town as well!!

-Facebook, etc. Its an easy way to promote your business to the potential customers. Its easy to keep it fresh in their minds with zero paper, ink, or postage. You can also easily notify them of new specials, services, etc.

-Children's ball games, or if you don't have children, perhaps just going to local school's the ball games. People like to do business with people who support their children in sports.

-Any other network you can find.
