Lawn care business tips
Hi Travis,

Welcome to our forum!

What do you attribute the growth of your company too? How is it that some businesses can be around for 10 years and still just be a one or two man operation and yours has grown so much? What do you feel other businesses just don't realize when it comes to growing like this? What are they missing?

Steve,
I'd like to first thank you for this website and the hospitality. To answer some of your questions I will tell you in this economy any growth is positive for your company. Having the right people working for you is another. I believe in this age of lawn care alot of companys want as much buisness as they can get and service them when they can or take to much buisness that they can't service them and lose them. We take the customers wants and needs into planning a work week to were we are there when they want us not when we can be there. Alot of buisness can be around for 10 years with one or two guys because of how good the company is to that/there employees or how much work they can keep from the past years or sub-contracting. I would say alot of people don't realize when growing from a 2 man partnership llc to a 20 man company is when you bid something you need to take into consideration all equipment drivetime and labor not just labor. you equipment makes you the money and so do your employees. I would never make it in this buisness cutting yards for 5-10 dollars if I had a $13,000 mower, $15,000 truck and $2000 trailer. THATS 30,000 Of equipment losing me money every account. I'm not saying charging more would solve this problem but you have to make your living in better places then 5-10 dollar lawn mows. Like I said we service 47 commercial accounts that avg. $75-$1500 a cut. Make sure your equipment has a budget in that quote and your employees are making you money and anything extra goes towards your pocket or the companies pocket. Some companys around the NW Ohio area are missing the service and quality aspect and lowballing bigger companys out of the way just to get in for 2 years and then be gone because of poor quality. I know alot of companys and buisness we have like there yard done with striping of the lawn and bagged grass. We do whatever it takes because you never know when your last season will be. I think contract work is the best set ur self a budget and a price and then do the work you contracted out alot of buisness wont do that because they arent sure they'll make it till the next season. I do this all the time so I know how much work load we have for 2-3 seasons and try to get more work between contracts. I hope this will help some people understand a little better.

That is very fascinating!

As the marketing manager, do you have advice as to what lawn care business owners should be focusing on when it comes to marketing and attracting new customers and what they should stay away from?
