Orginal quote to cut it was $80. Then we called them back and requested more money. We re-quoted them after work began at $120.00. After it was done, he paid us $140.00.
How did that work? Did you see the property in person when you initially bid and simply underestimated the time it would take to mow or did you quote the property sight unseen?

How did the customer handle you calling them back to say you needed to charge more?

What's your advice on this process and if there is an ideal way to go about it?

Steve,

orginally we saw it in person but just underestimated the time it would take to chop down the jungle. We politelty called the guy and told him we goofed on the estimate underestimated it and would need more money and he said sure how much? We said $120. he said how bout $140? We said ok lol.

He was a great guy. Keyword:was. He passed away this winter with pneumonia and he was in his 50's i think. May god bless his soul. I am still in shock about it all. Last i seen him in November 2010, he was in perfect health. Now i work for his wife and daughter.

My advice is this -> Everyone from time to time makes mistakes. An estimate is truly a GUESS-timate. Just politely say to the customer you under estimated the bid and need XXX more dollars. They can either say sure thats fine or we agreed on this? <- Unless you have it in writing. if they say we agreed on this you have two(2) options based on the info below.

You gave them an estimate in writing with the amount on it. You have no choice to a degree but to bite the bullet and do the work for the amount agreed.

If you do not have it in writing...... Let them know your at the orginally quoted amount now and will be leaving the work unfinished. they will either say thats fine or ask how much will it cost to finish the job.

i am sure others will have other options. those are just mine.

Do you think this applies to all jobs or more so for overgrown lawns?

As you do more overgrown lawns, do you get a better feel for how long such jobs will take or is it always a crap shoot?
