When it starts to fray the ends of the grass blades it needs sharpened.

I bought a bench grinder for this very purpose and I'm constantly disappointed with the results. I'm probably going to end up getting a Magnamatic Mag-9000 as soon as I can justify the cost.

Remember grinding is only half of the process. Blades must be balanced or you'll sacrifice spindle life.

Thanks! I was noticing the grass wasn't even getting cut hardly. I was like something is not right. The blade was Dull as a door knob. I tried to sharpen it but I am not sure if it worked. i read some where that if you mow and the grass ends are frayed and brown then the blade is dull. After i sharpened the blade i put it back on and did 3 stripes in my back yard. The grass was still brown in some places but not in others. I am not sure if it is from mowing last week or if it is just the blade is still dull?

How do you recomend balancing blades?

If the grass ends look like these, sharpen the blades.

I use a small pole attached to a stud in my garage. After you sharpen it, I slide the pole in the hole and make sure it is parallel to the floor, if one side hangs lower than the other, the low side needs a bit more cut.

thanks jymie I will check out my grass tomorrow to see how it looks. Does it turn brown immediately or does it take a few hours to turn brown? On the blade i tried to sharpen I didn't follow the acutal factory edge on one side. Does that mean the blade might as well be thrown out?

You can tell relatively quickly as the dull blade is actually burning the blades as it cut through it and bruises the grass as shown in the pictures, thats where the brown comes from.

You should follow the actual sharpened part of the blade. When sharpening, use quick strokes so as not to grind to much off at a time, do equal amounts of quick strokes on both side to minimize over grinding one side leading to it being uneven. UNEVEN BLADES WILL DAMAGE THE HOUSING THAT THE BLADE CONNECTS TO. I will only resharpen the blades once then buy new ones after that to keep them as balanced as possible.

Here is a simple cheap sharpener that works excellent, our blades are sharpened every weekend and only takes a few moments with this attachment, Lee Valley has a warehouse in NYC for shipping to customers in the USA

I sharpen my mower blades with a file by hand. That's because I can't afford anything that isn't absolutely necessary right now.

Using regular 21 and 22 inch push mowers.

Balancing the blade is a concern for me.

I get both sides sharp, then put it on a nail in the center hole to check balance, then sharpen the heavy side more until it looks level when balanced on the nail.

Is this an acceptable method? Is balancing it on a nail accurate enough? How good does balance have to be to avoid mower damage? (Looks perfectly level on the nail, a tiny amount off ok, ...)

Given the expense of mower damage I certainly intend to get a machine or have pros sharpen blades when I can afford that.

The website says it is good for about 10 sharpenings. What has your experience been with how long the wheel will last?
