I make all my own compost as well...well, there is about 10 companies that contribute to the compost pile. We have a local landscape supply yard screen it for us for $15 per yard.

I apply compost to turf at a 1/2 layer. I use a shovel and wheel barrow to make piles and spread with a landscape rake. I do see now that suppliers are making a pellet for that you can spread with a fert spreader. Gonna try that this spring, very interested to see the results.
