Question How to take care of your lawn after winter

Hi,

I'm starting up my lawn care business, and i was wondering how should i take care of the lawn after winter.

Because i have heard that you should mow it very low the first time and then put the blades higher every mow time.

Others can jump in here but it seems most on here try to stay away from scalping a lawn.

Default two cents

Basically your lawn's shoots will match the lawn's roots. If you leave lawn long, over time, the roots will also lengthen, giving the grass plant more resilience and strength. However, "one time" scalping doesn't generally affect the roots, it's a cumulative effect. Generally accepted practice, though, at least in the northeast-for the last mowing, is to cut the lawn shorter than normal. (1.75" vs. 3" for example) Definitely not scalping as this can actually kill some of the plants and schock the lawn in general. Scalping would be ok for an aeration and overseeding or slice seeding, but that's the only time it's really used that I'm aware of.
