Default Ford brings Wi-Fi to the highway...

Is this really necessary in this economy? More luxuries to pay for? I think its time that today's people get back to being content with basic necessities. Necessities that they can afford. Or maybe it is just me......

Here is the article.

Does this mean I won't have to use my cellphone to text while driving anymore?

Just kidding.

Although, it will probably be used while driving!!

You're right. People will then be able to just "cruise the net" while driving. You know, watch youtube videos, text their girlfriend in the shower (yes, you can get waterproof cellphones), let twitter ruin their life, change their facebook.com status, send and receive emails, blog, instant message or read the news about how Obama will increase the deficit next.

Ok, so some of those links are goofy, but some are serious, and others are just sickening...

I keep a laptop and printer in the truck, it's basically my mobile office for quotes, it is rare that I can't find a Hot spot and connect to the Internet, worse case is to just drive up to a coffee sop and sit outside in the truck if I need Internet access, but generally homes here use wireless and most in my experience do not have their LAN locked down so its pretty easy to get access.

I like the blue tooth in my Volkswagen Jetta, it answers the phone for me, very, very clear, I can push a button and tell the car's computer who to call as it syncs with my contact book, took some time to figure all this stuff out, had to get a younger experienced fellow to show me all the tricks but I like it.

Now if I can only get voice to text for SMS we will be all set as the majority of my communication with staff and clients is SMS, or I can email from the Blackberry.

So it's a 3G cell phone connection that creates a 300 ft wifi area around your car?

That is interesting. I wonder how that competes with people who are just using their cell phones now to connect to the internet.

If the auto manufacturers are looking for an additional revenue stream, what are they going to do that will stand out from alternatives? None of this sounds like they are really standing out, or am I missing it?

I am not sure how that works but I suspect they will be using their own network. I am just not sure how all this works.

I saw an ad yesterday that talked about 4g network and it got me wondering what 3g and 4g actually was.

3g - International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a family of standards for mobile telecommunications defined by the International Telecommunication Union,[1] which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well as DECT and WiMAX. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Compared to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher data rates (up to 14.0 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink with HSPA+). Thus, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.
