Default I need help bidding this job!

Well everyone I run a small one man operation and for this job will be employing 2 helpers who are very experienced in our field. Well here is the job: (this is a copy of what the owner e-mailed me)

TREE TRIMMING
Many need to be pruned. One large, unhealthy tree needs to be felled. Two or three smaller live oaks need to be felled to make room for new trees.. And the canopy will need to be trimmed back in a couple of areas to allow sunlight for the newly planted trees.
WOOD CUTTING
Anything large enough for firewood needs to be cut, split, and stacked. I have a manual hydraulic splitter, by the way.
PLANTING
-12 to 15 clumping bamboo plants along two fencelines (5 gallon size plants). And plant two 5 gallon running bamboo plants on either side of walkway approach to front door.
-24 pots of Virginia Creeper at points along chain-link fence and walls of house.
-1 Weeping Willow (7') in corner of lot
-1 Almond tree (8') behind house.
-1 Picholine Olive tree (10') behind house.
-1 Mexicola Grande avocado tree (5gallon) behind house.
PATHWAY
Place 20-25 Limestone stepping-stones.

Ok the large tree he is talking about is a fourty foot oak tree. The smaller live oaks are about 30 foot each. He has around 8 other trees that he is looking to have trimmed 4 of these are a mess three of these are 30 footers the other messy tree is 40 ft. The taller ones just need light work but are 40-50 ft.
Well I hope you guys can help me win this bid. Oh by the way the big problem in winning this bid is that down here their are alot of companys that dont pay taxes and employ illegals for very cheap.

How experienced are you in doing this service?

You have 1 tree to take down and haul away along with 3 others to trim?

How are you going to take down that tree and how long will it take you? How will you dispose of the tree?

How will you trim the other 3 trees? How long will that take for each?

I have 2 years of tree work experience.
For the big tree I am planning on removing the big limbs first then cutting the tree down as a whole their is plenty of room for it to fall. I'm thinking an hour to have it on the ground then another to chop it to reasonable pieces to fit in the trailer. The owner wants two smaller oaks taken down also that will take 2 hours to cut down and chop up for the both. The tree trimming will be done with pruning saws I think with me and my two guys 4 hours. Then another 2 for clean up. I want to haul everything off the day after because it will probably be three loads to the dump.

In the past we had talked about tree removal on here and I think there is a tendency to underbid the jobs. Your overhead will be different from others but consider this

Quote:
But I could say that my average pay for a tree removal in my area is around $400 if I don’t have to climb it. $800-$1200 if I have to climb and piece it down.
From this discussion How much should I charge for a Tree Removal?

What do you think of that for the tree removal estimate?

You should also take some pictures of this job. Before and after to show us.

Well I bid $1000 for the tree work(removing 1large and 2smaller trees) and trimming some tree's on the property. He declined and said that he was going to try to remove the tree's himself, I told him to be careful and call me if he had any questions. He asked for a bid just to trim the tree's I told him $400 and if he needed the branches hauled I could do it for $100 per trailer load. Here in Austin there is a place that only charges $20 much cheaper than the $75 at the dump This place profits from this because they turn it into mulch. Are their places like this everywhere? Well I guess I gotta wait and see what the guy says. He did give me the other part of the job which I bid $45 per hour for three men I'm gonna take my guys out there and have them work at an average pace seeing how this isnt much money.

There are in many locations and if there not, it's a business to consider starting!

This sounds interesting! Did he have any tree removal experience or is he simply going to try and cut it in a direction away from his house?

When you gave him your bid for the tree removal, did you feel like haggling with him a bit or was that a figure you felt you didn't want to go below?

Well I am not sure if he has any experience with removing trees, he told me a friend was gonna help him with this. I started the job today and got alot done, i rented a pole pruner. I did want to haggle about the tree removal bid but he set his mind on doing it himself.

How did the pole saw work out?

It should be interesting to hear how it turns out with the home owner taking the tree down himself.

That is fantastic! What kind of pole saw did you get?

What do you think you learned from this job and the bidding of the job? Would you have done anything differently?
